Lestat Is Revamping a Classic With His Bold Take on ‘Dancing With Myself’

Our new favorite artist, French vampire Lestat de Lioncourt, has released a new track, and yes, we’re already obsessed. His latest drop is a cover of the iconic Billy Idol song Dancing With Myself, now available to stream on all major music platforms. But in true Lestat fashion, he’s not just covering the song… he’s, and excuse us for the lack of a better word, revamping it.

The track, released by AMC Networks and Lakeshore Records, arrives as part of the musical rollout tied to his upcoming series, The Vampire Lestat, set to premiere this summer. While the song itself was already teased in the show’s trailer released just a couple of days ago, hearing the full version confirms what we suspected: Lestat isn’t here to play it safe. He’s here to be heard.

Originally written by Idol himself and Tony James, Dancing With Myself has long been a staple of rebellious self-expression. That legacy makes it a bold choice for any artist, but especially for one who’s just stepping into the modern music scene. Still, if anyone was going to take a swing at covering such an iconic track, it would be Lestat. And with series composer Daniel Hart behind the arrangement, the result feels intentionally unpredictable. As Hart has previously shared, we should “expect Lestat to change his musical colors throughout the season,” and this track wastes no time proving that point.

What stands out immediately is how layered this version feels. It starts with a rock foundation but quickly expands into something far more eclectic. There are hints of paso doble woven into the rhythm, trap elements that ground it in a contemporary soundscape, and a theatricality that feels distinctly Lestat. It’s less about staying faithful to the original and more about reshaping it into something that reflects the many facets of his identity.

And that’s where the track really lands for us. Lestat’s interpretation of Dancing With Myself feels like a declaration. He refuses to be defined, confined, or reduced—not as an artist, not as a performer, and certainly not as an immortal navigating a very human industry. His music, much like his identity, contains multitudes, and this cover makes that impossible to ignore.

Of course, he’s not the first to take on this song. Artists like American Authors, The Donnas, and Blink-182 have all delivered memorable versions over the years. But after revisiting those and diving into Lestat’s, we can’t help but feel like this might be the boldest interpretation yet.  It’s theatrical, a little chaotic, and undeniably personal, qualities that might not work for everyone, but feel completely authentic to him.

Vocally, Sam Reid—Lestat’s very human vessel—continues to surprise us. There’s a rawness to his performance that fits perfectly with the character’s larger-than-life presence and works in the song’s favor. He’s inhabiting the song, pushing and pulling at the melody in a way that feels intentional, even when it borders on unpredictable, proving he’s more than capable of carrying Lestat’s musical ambitions forward.

So, what did y’all Beautiful Unwell think of Lestat’s latest release? Are you as obsessed as we are, or are you still processing this wild, genre-bending ride?
