‘Soul Mate’ Trailer Promises a Decade-Spanning Love Story Ahead of Its Netflix Debut
The long-awaited Soul Mate trailer is finally here, and… yeah, we’re not okay. We’re not exaggerating when we say we’re already drowning in our emotions. Netflix just gave us our first real glimpse at this upcoming limited series, and if this preview is anything to go by, we should probably start preparing ourselves for a love story that’s going to hit hard, y’all.
Set to premiere on May 14, Soul Mate stars Hayato Isomura and Ok Taec-yeon, and is written and directed by Shunki Hashizume. From the jump, the Soul Mate trailer makes it clear that this isn’t just any romance; it’s a sweeping, decade-spanning journey that explores connection, destiny, and the kind of love that refuses to be easily defined or contained. And yes, we’re absolutely seated for a story that dares to go this big, this emotional, and this unapologetically heartfelt.
The series follows two young men, Ryu (Hayato Isomura) and Johan (Ok Taec-yeon), whose lives become intertwined across cities like Berlin, Seoul, and Tokyo. They come from completely different worlds, speak different languages, and yet, something keeps pulling them back to each other. Over the course of ten years, we watch their bond deepen into something that feels destined, like the universe itself decided they were meant to find one another. But as the Soul Mate trailer teases, fate isn’t always kind, and their journey is filled with both tender moments and painful twists.

Ryu, once a rising ice hockey player, is weighed down by guilt and searching for a way to move forward when he ends up in Berlin. It’s there, in a moment that feels almost cinematic in its intensity, that he crosses paths with Johan, a Korean boxer who quite literally saves his life. From that point on, their connection unfolds in a way that feels both fragile and powerful. Two people finding solace, friction, and ultimately, love in each other.
What makes the Soul Mate trailer stand out to us is how it leans into the emotional complexity of queer relationships. This isn’t just about falling in love—it’s about timing, trauma, healing, and the choices that shape who we become. There’s something deeply resonant in watching two men navigate intimacy and identity across cultures and years, especially in a story that, by the looks of it, doesn’t shy away from the messiness of it all.
The trailer gives us just enough to piece together this journey, and if it’s any indication, we should probably brace ourselves for a full-on emotional spiral.
The series also features a stacked supporting cast, including Ai Hashimoto, Koshi Mizukami, Yutaro Furutachi, Lee Jae-yi, Chihiro Kato, Ken Yasuda, Kaho Minami, and Tomokazu Miura. We also get a sneak peek at the theme song, “Our Hearts ft. AiNA THE END” by STUTS & butaji, which already sounds like it’s going to hit just as hard as the story itself.
So yeah, we’re officially counting down the days until May 14. We’ll be right there, blankets ready, snacks secured, and fully prepared to let Ryu and Johan completely wreck us… in the best way possible, of course.
Soul Mate will start streaming on Thursday May 14 exclusively on Netflix. Follow us on X and Instagram for all queer stuff!
