Red, White & Royal Wedding Is Officially a Go, With Jamie Babbit at the Helm

This is not a drill. We repeat, this is not a drill! Out of absolutely nowhere, Prime Video has dropped the long-awaited title for the sequel to their smash hit Red, White & Royal Blue, and we’re collectively screaming into our teacups. The name? Red, White & Royal Wedding. Yes, you heard that right: wedding. As in, Alex and Henry are (presumably!) heading down the aisle, and we’re already RSVP-ing “yes.”

The announcement arrived in the form of a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it six-second video, but it was all it took for the internet to spiral into delightful chaos. Because let’s be honest, those two words carry massive implications, and we’ll need at least a week (maybe two) to emotionally recover.

If your memory needs a quick rewind, Prime Video officially greenlit the sequel back in May 2024 during a special screening of the first film. At the time, it was confirmed that Red, White & Royal Blue director and screenwriter Matthew López would be teaming up with the book’s author, Casey McQuiston, to bring this next royal chapter to life. Now, we’ve learned that My Lady Jane writer Gemma Burgess has also joined the writing team—making this a powerhouse trio behind the script.

And while López isn’t returning to direct this time around, the sequel couldn’t be in better hands. Queer cinema icon Jamie Babbit—yes, the But I’m a Cheerleader legend herself—is stepping in to helm Red, White & Royal Wedding, guiding the next chapter in Alex and Henry’s love story.

“After directing But I’m a Cheerleader in my 20s, I’m thrilled to be back in the queer love universe of Red, White & Royal Wedding,” Babbit said. “We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy, and gay joy.” Honestly? We couldn’t agree more.

Of course, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine are returning to reprise their beloved roles as Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry of England. Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps for now—no plot details, no production dates, nothing. But we’re keeping our royal watch on full alert for when the next crumbs drop.

Behind the scenes, Red, White & Royal Wedding reunites a dream team of creatives and producers. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are back, alongside Michael McGrath, Matthew López, Jennifer Salke, and Casey McQuiston, who will also serve as executive producer. “What a dream to be able to return to the world of Red, White & Royal Blue. We are eternally grateful to Casey McQuiston for trusting us with their beloved book in the first place. It’s been such fun to work with Casey, Matthew López, and Gemma Burgess to dream up another chapter in Alex and Henry’s epic love story.” Berlanti and Schechter said in a joint statement. “There is no filmmaker better suited to direct this film than Jamie Babbit. Her decades of championing queer stories and her track record of delivering smart, funny, heartwarming films and television gives us great confidence.”

Amazon MGM Studios’ head of film, Julie Rapaport, added, “We couldn’t be more excited to continue that journey with Jamie Babbit at the helm—her sharp comedic sensibility and heartfelt storytelling make her the perfect director to build on the magic of the first film, in which Matthew López beautifully brought to life from Casey McQuiston’s beloved book. Together with Jamie, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Matthew, Casey, Jennifer Salke, Gemma Burgess, and of course Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez, we can’t wait to bring fans an unforgettable new chapter in their love story.”

As for López and McQuiston, both seem equally thrilled to pass the baton. “It’s been a blast to dream up the next chapter of their story as a producer and co-writer,” López said. “I’m delighted to be passing the directing baton to Jamie, whose vision and sense of humor will be a perfect match for our film.” McQuiston echoed the excitement: “Working with this team to bring Red, White & Royal Blue to life has been a dream come true, and I hope readers and watchers alike will love how the story continues in the sequel. I’m so grateful to Matthew for all his hard work on the first movie and in co-creating this new story with me, and I know that Jamie has the vision, wit, and tenderness to take great care of Alex and Henry from here.”

Now, for the three people on the planet who still haven’t seen Red, White & Royal Blue (seriously, what are you waiting for?), here’s a quick recap. The story follows Alex, the charismatic First Son of the United States, and Prince Henry of England, whose rivalry takes an unexpected turn after a very public mishap forces them to fake a friendship. What starts as a political damage control PR stunt soon becomes a whirlwind romance, complete with banter, chaos, and the kind of queer love story we’ve always wanted to see front and center.

So yes, we’re being very calm and very normal about Red, White & Royal Wedding (read: we’re feral). And sure, maybe it’s too soon to start talking about a third film, but hear us out—Red, White & Royal Baby. Just putting the idea out into the universe.
