Things Are Looking Up for a Potential Season 2 of Overcompensating
Things seem to be moving in a very promising direction for a potential season 2 of Overcompensating. Yes, you read that right. While Prime Video hasn’t officially announced a renewal of the hit comedy show just yet, we’re closer than ever to getting another semester at Yates.
In late July, Vernon Sanders, the Co-Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, told Variety that Prime Video is currently “in conversations” with the team behind Overcompensating about a second season and confirmed that a writers’ room is already up and running. “We’ll hope to have renewal announcements soon,” he added.
We don’t know about you, but that definitely sounds more like renewal energy than cancellation vibes to us. And honestly, it would make total sense. Overcompensating struck a chord with audiences thanks to its mix of sharp humor, chaotic college nostalgia, and an unfiltered look at the messy, beautiful process of figuring out your identity. Especially as a young queer person trying to survive the frat house and find your people.

Created by internet icon and comedian Benito Skinner, the eight-episode series follows Benny (played by Skinner), a closeted golden boy from Idaho who arrives at the fictional Yates University for his freshman year. Between toxic masculinity, wild parties, emotional repression, and roommate drama, Benny has a lot on his plate—and he’s not going through it alone. The show is stacked with a top-tier ensemble, including Wally Baram as his bestie Carmen, Mary Beth Barone as his no-nonsense sister Grace, and Adam DiMarco (The White Lotus) as Grace’s painfully bro-y boyfriend Peter.
The season 1 finale left us with some major cliffhangers. Benny finally walked away from the toxic frat that defined so much of his image, but by the end of the semester, he’d only come out to a small circle of people. That all changed during a party meltdown, when Carmen accidentally outed him in front of Grace and Miles. So, where does Benny go from here? Will he try to stay closeted? Will he finally feel free to open up more? And could season 2 bring a new love interest into the mix?
Benito Skinner has already teased what’s to come if the show gets picked up. In a cast interview with Variety, he said, “I really hope we do [get a second season]. I am ready to go. I think I know what I want to do, and there’s so much more we wanna say. There will be backslide, and that’s what that finale is. This journey of becoming yourself and overcompensating, it’s a rollercoaster.”
He’s not wrong. College is a chaotic ride—equal parts selfish and transformative—and Overcompensating dives into that journey with zero apologies and maximum heart. It’s also deeply, unapologetically queer, which is exactly why we’ve been rooting for this show from the start.
So, fingers crossed we get to see a potential season 2 of Overcompensating. With so many questions still up in the air, and so much more queer chaos to explore, it feels like Benny’s story is far from over. And honestly? We can’t wait to see where it goes next.
