Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ Trailer Promises a Gritty, Surreal Romance in 1950s Mexico

The trailer for Queer has finally arrived, and we can already feel the anticipation building. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Call Me By Your Name and most recently Challengers, Queer is set to bring another layered LGBTQ+ narrative to the big screen, one that captures the complex dance between isolation and desire. Based on the novel by William S. Burroughs and adapted by Justin Kuritzkes, the film is shaping up to be a striking, sensual experience.

Starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, Queer transports us to 1950s Mexico City, a setting as volatile as the film’s central relationship. Craig plays William Lee, a disillusioned American expat whose infatuation with fellow American Eugene Allerton (Starkey) quickly spirals into an all-consuming obsession. Their bond is forged amidst addiction, isolation, and Lee’s self-destructive search for connection. As hinted in the trailer, this is a story not only of unrequited longing but of the haunting, sometimes destructive beauty of human intimacy.

Supporting this on-screen chemistry, we’ve got a fantastic cast that includes Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, and Omar Apollo, bringing even more depth to Guadagnino’s gritty but poetic vision. Set to open in theaters on November 27, Queer has already stirred up excitement following its premiere at Venice, where it competed for the Golden Lion, before heading to TIFF and the New York Film Festival.

For all of us who crave stories that break traditional molds, A24’s Queer promises to be more than just a period piece—it’s a look at LGBTQ+ experiences through the eyes of one of today’s most innovative directors.
