Heartstopper: Our top 5 cutest moments
Heartstopper has only been available to stream for a week and it’s already ranked in the number five position of most watched (English) shows on Netflix, with over 24 million hours of viewing time clocked so far. We’re trying really hard not to turn into a full-blown Heartstopper stan magazine *coughs, no we’re not, coughs* but we’re pretty sure we’re not going to stop ranting about this show any time soon. We’ve narrowed this one down into our top 5 cutest moments, but honestly, we’d be lying if we said we could separate them all out properly right now. The entire show is just cute after cute after cute.
Asking us to just choose five moments feels unfair like we are being asked to give up our left kidney or something – rude, just rude. We want everyone to know that we didn’t leave out the other fifty thousand cute moments the show serves on purpose, but we couldn’t fit them all here at once. Please forgive us if we continue to write articles about just how cute it all is, over and over again.
However, we did manage to agree on what we’re calling our top 5 cutest moments but are actually just 5 unbelievably adorable moments that we all agreed take the cake. So saddle up, fam. We’re journeying through the ridiculously cute Heartstopper.
5. Episode 6 “Girls” – Tao and Elle arriving at the milkshake date
In this episode, Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney) arrive at the milkshake cafe for their triple date with the gang – except they don’t know it’s a triple date. Their friends decided that they need a little help in driving their friendship out of the friend zone and into the romantic lane, so they organize the milkshake date but don’t actually tell Tao and Elle that they’re on a date.
When Tao and Elle arrive, they arrive separately and see each other from across a yard/courtyard. Tao immediately turns around to greet Elle by presenting her with his bum and twerking at her as he moves closer with each step. Elle, catching on to the moment, pretends to throw a fishing line over to Tao and reels him in with each new step. The whole thing is just so cute.
This one landed in our top 5 cutest moments because this scene really embodies the real people that Tao and Elle are, and how they complement each other so much. Tao often comes across as angry and emo in scenes with other characters, but Elle is Tao’s happy place and she is able to bring his sunshine (which is hidden pretty far inside) to the surface.
4. Episode 4 “Secret” – Rainy kisses
After making out with Charlie (Joe Locke) the night before at a party, Nick (Kit Connor) finds himself standing on Charlie’s doorstep the next morning. They take the conversation upstairs but Nick ends up telling Charlie he is having a full-on gay crisis. They hug it out, Nick tells Charlie how much he likes him, but that he’s not ready to be out just yet. Charlie says he understands, because he is a gift sent from heaven, and they agree to explore whatever they have going in secret for now.
Despite Nick being the second boy to ask Charlie to date in secret, Charlie reckons this time is different this time around and he seems pleased as punch by the arrangement. Charlie likes Nick a whole bunch too and just seems thrilled to be the object of Nick’s affection.
They say an awkward (but cute) goodbye in the foyer of Charlie’s house and then Nick leaves. Charlie, overcome by his feelings at the moment, throws on his shoes and throws himself out the door into the pouring rain and chases after Nick. Then Charlie is pushing himself into Nick’s space as the rain pours down around them and they’re locking lips and my god we couldn’t remember the last time two teenage boys kissing on the street had ever been so flipping adorable.
Then Charlie takes off running back towards his house and we were left sitting on the couch swooning like the bunch of Heartstopper drunk fans that we are.
3. Episode 8 “Boyfriend” – Love drunk Nick
Look, there are a lot of things to love about this episode, but the way that Nick fumbles over his feelings for Charlie and gushes to his mother (Olivia Colman) about just how much he likes Charlie is hands down one of the cutest things we’ve ever seen – so ergo, it’s in our top 5 cutest moments.
After spending a really lovely, romantic day with Charlie at the beach (where he and Charlie decide to start telling people about their relationship), Nick comes home, sits down with a cup of tea, and comes out to the Queen of England. He tells his mother that they only started seeing each other a few months ago, but that he has liked Charlie for a lot longer than that. Nick’s happiness, his joy, and his affection for Charlie are painted all over his stupid lovesick face (we love that face, by the way).
Then he proceeds to tell his mother that he likes girls too and he introduces her to the concept of bisexuality. We also thought this moment deserved a mention because help – it is just so stinking cute. Nick assuming his mother might not know what the concept was and adorably and awkwardly stumbling over how to define it had us screaming AWWWWWWW at the television.
2. Episode 3 “Kiss” – Rainbow make-out sessions
In this episode, Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) wind up at the same party as Nick and Charlie. Tara bumps into Nick (who she made out with when she was thirteen) and tells Nick that she is a lesbian. Nick’s reaction is pretty cute (because he is Nick freaking Nelson) and says that he only knows one other out gay person, and starts gushing about Charlie (because of course he does).
Darcy swoops in to whisk Tara off to the dance floor and before long the two girls, who have just decided that they’re not going to hide their relationship anymore, are making out in the middle of the dance floor shrouded in rainbow lights.
This moment is number 2 on our top 5 cutest moments list because it’s incredibly refreshing to see two gay women engaged in a physical moment that is simply just wholesome. There is nothing about Heartstopper that sexualizes these characters, but this is especially important for the characters of Tara and Darcy because gay women are always sexualized on screen. So cheers, Netflix, for finally giving the lesbians what they want.
1. Episode 8 “Boyfriend” – Love drunk Nick, part 2
The culminating, cutest moment of the whole entire show happens at the beach in the last episode. Nick takes Charlie to the beach for some one-on-one romance time and these two love-drunk fools are gushing all over each other. Nick tells Charlie that he likes him so much and he does that thing with his face again where it’s positively written all over his cheeks. How this boy managed to hide his crush for so long, we’ll never know. It positively radiates off of him.
But then, just to make sure Charlie really gets the message, Nick jumps to his feet and rushes to the ocean shore, and throws himself in the water. He screams loudly “I like Charlie Spring and in a romantic way, not just a friend way!” He picks up Charlie princess style and wades into the water in the cutest, most disgusting display of beautiful young love that we’ve ever seen and why are they like this?
It’s everything Charlie deserves. To have Nick shout his feelings for Charlie into the open for everyone to hear after being asked for so long to hide himself and his feelings away is incredibly validating and had us sobbing like the Heartstopper fools that we’ve become. 13/10 Nick Nelson best boyfriend ever, and also 13/10, Charlie Spring, most deserving of that love.
