‘Screams From the Tower’ Is Bringing Queer Coming-of-Age Chaos to VOD This April

There’s something undeniably special about a coming-of-age story that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly new, and Screams From the Tower looks ready to deliver exactly that. The indie queer comedy is officially heading to VOD on April 14, and trust us, this is one you’ll want to keep on your radar.

Set in the mid-1990s, Screams From the Tower taps into that pre-social media era we rarely get to see explored through a queer lens. Instead of perfectly curated online personas, we’re thrown into a world of awkward adolescence, messy friendships, and the kind of growing pains that feel all too real. The film follows Julien and Cary, two best friends navigating high school alongside their tight-knit group of queer outsiders. When they finally land their own show on the school’s radio station, everything changes because suddenly, they’re not just surviving high school, they’re defining it.

What makes Screams From the Tower stand out is how it reclaims a genre that hasn’t always made space for LGBTQ+ stories. Inspired by the legacy of classic coming-of-age films, the film essentially asks: what if those iconic stories had centered queer teens all along, specifically, two closeted gay high school boys? It’s a simple but powerful shift that reframes everything.

We’ve seen countless coming-of-age classics centered on straight teens, but here, queerness isn’t a side note; it’s the heartbeat of the story. The film leans into friendship, identity, and the complicated, often hilarious journey of figuring out who we are, all while giving queer teens the spotlight they’ve always deserved.

Director Cory Wexler Grant shared insight into the inspiration behind the film, saying, “I wanted Screams From the Tower to show the current generation an analogue world, when the Internet was slow, and social media had yet to descend—a simpler time, an awkward time, arguably a more innocent time.”

He continues,“So many coming-of-age films, particularly queer films, have focused on drugs, sex, and parties, parental persecution, religious bigotry, unrequited high school crushes, etc. I’d like to think Screams From the Tower falls sweetly into a new crop of queer films and television shows that anyone can relate to, regardless of one’s identity. Above all, Screams From the Tower is a love letter to my best friend—we met when we were eight years old—my gay brother from another mother. This film is a romantic comedy about our lifelong friendship. I hope audiences enjoy it. I hope they see themselves in it. And I hope they watch it and share it with their best friends.”

That sense of love and connection is exactly what we’re excited about. Queer stories that center friendship, especially those that feel lived-in and personal, always hit a little differently, and this one seems poised to resonate across generations.

If you’re into heartfelt comedies, chaotic high school energy, and stories that celebrate queer identity in all its messy, beautiful glory, this should absolutely be on your watchlist.
