‘So Gay for You’: Charlie Covell to Adapt Kate Moennig & Leisha Hailey’s Beloved Memoir Into New Series

In an exclusive from Deadline, it was announced yesterday that Charlie Covell—best known for The End of the F**ing World* and Kaos—is developing a series at Amazon MGM Studios based on So Gay for You: Friendship, Found Family, and the Show That Started It All, the memoir written by Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey. And honestly? We’re already counting this as a must-watch.

The So Gay for You adaptation will see Moennig and Hailey not only stepping back into the spotlight as leads but also serving as executive producers on the project. For those of us who have been hooked on them since their iconic run on The L Word and The L Word: Generation Q, this feels like a long-overdue celebration of their legacy. And yes, a very real win for the lady gays.

The series is described as a comedy centered on female friendship and life after The L Word, which already feels like the perfect setup considering the story they’ve shared in their book. The memoir itself has this incredibly intimate, conversational feel, like sitting across from Moennig and Hailey as they walk us through how they met, how their bond grew, and how that connection evolved into a chosen family during their time on the show.

Throughout So Gay for You, they reflect on what it was like to be part of The L Word during a time when queer representation on television was still frustratingly limited. They open up about their personal lives too, figuring out who they were, navigating relationships, and trying to build careers in an industry that wasn’t always ready to embrace them fully. It’s a mix of funny, casual storytelling and deeper, more emotional moments that touch on identity, loss, and belonging.

What makes the book really resonate is how it goes beyond the typical celebrity memoir. It’s not just about fame or behind-the-scenes anecdotes, but about friendship, community, and the kind of chosen family that so many of us in the LGBTQ+ community understand on a deeply personal level. There’s a warmth to it that lingers, and it captures a pivotal moment in queer pop culture while still feeling grounded in something universal.

That’s why we can’t help but feel excited about what this adaptation could bring. If the series channels even a bit of that honesty and heart, we’re in for something special, and probably something that hits close to home in all the right ways.

Covell is attached as creator, showrunner, and executive producer. They’ll be joined by executive producers Jessica Rhoades and Alison Mo Massey through Pacesetter Productions, along with Nina Lederman, in addition to Moennig and Hailey.

And while that’s everything we know about So Gay for You so far, we’ll definitely be keeping a very close eye on this one. As soon as more details drop, you already know we’ll be right here, ready to share every update with y’all.
