Watch the Emotional Official Plainclothes Trailer Ahead of Its September Release

Last month, we shared the exciting news that Carmen Emmi’s Plainclothes was finally headed to select theaters on September 19. Now, ahead of its highly anticipated theatrical release, the official Plainclothes trailer and poster have dropped, and trust us, they pack an emotional punch.

For those who aren’t familiar with Plainclothes, the film takes us to 1990s upstate New York and is inspired by true events. It follows Lucas (Tom Blyth), a closeted, working-class undercover cop assigned to a harrowing mission: targeting gay men in public spaces and arresting them under outdated indecency laws. But his mission takes an unexpected turn when he crosses paths with Andrew (Russell Tovey), one of his intended targets.

What begins as a sting operation slowly evolves into something far more intimate. As their encounters shift from mall bathrooms to quiet greenhouses and shadowy movie palaces, Lucas starts to question the very core of his identity and the morality of his assignment. The chemistry between Lucas and Andrew is undeniable, and surveillance gives way to connection, then to love. The cost for both men? Potentially everything.

The Plainclothes trailer gives us a glimpse of the film’s aching emotional tension, the period-perfect atmosphere, and the charged performances at its heart. This isn’t just a queer love story, it’s a bold examination of the way systemic oppression, secrecy, and desire collide.

Plainclothes had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast—a huge testament to the film’s emotional resonance and the powerhouse performances that drive it. Alongside Blyth and Tovey, the cast features Christian Cooke, Amy Forsyth, Maria Dizzia, John Bedford Lloyd, Gabe Fazio, and Sam Asa Brownstein.

Distributed by Magnolia Pictures, Plainclothes is shaping up to be one of this year’s most gut-punching queer dramas, a film that refuses to look away from the pain of the past, even as it carves out a space for tenderness and love.

So, mark your calendars, folks, Plainclothes hits select theaters September 19. We’ll see you there.
