NewFest 2022: 3 queer films to see at festival this year

NewFest 2022 is currently taking place in New York City. The festival is a celebration and showcase of LGBTQ+ film and media from all over. As COVID-19 restrictions were lifted earlier in the year, NewFest responded accordingly and decided to host a hybrid model for the 2022 festival. Some events have been virtual and some events have been in person.

The Q+ Magazine team attended the virtual panel earlier this week with Omar Rudberg, Edvin Ryding, and Lisa Amjörn from Sweden’s queer smash hit Young Royals. If you’re interested in reading our coverage of that event, click here

There is so much incredible queer representation and queer talent being showcased this year at NewFest 2022. The queer film industry is on fire right now and NewFest decided to showcase the best of the best.

Here are the three most exciting and anticipated films screening at the festival this year.

My Policeman

My Policeman is a heart wrenching gay love story for the ages. Based on the novel of the same name by Bethan Roberts, this film features Emma Corrin (The Crown), One Direction’s Harry Styles, and David Dawson (The Last Kingdom). The story is set in two different time periods and depicts the complications of homosexual relationships during the 1950s – a time in the United Kingdom where being gay was a punishable crime – and much later on in the 1990s, where the two get a second chance at love.

Q+ Magazine has seen this one and can’t wait to share our official thoughts with you closer to the release date of the film.

Mama’s Boy

Mama’s Boy had its worldwide premiere yesterday at NewFest 2022. Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is responsible for this masterpiece, based on the 2019 memoir titled “Mama’s Boy: A Story From Our Americas”. The HBO documentary depicts Black’s experiences with his childhood, his relationship with his mother, and his LGBTQ identity.

Black won his Academy Award in 2009 for Best Original Screenplay for “Milk”. He is married to Olympic diver Tom Daley and they live in the U.K with their son.

Mama’s Boy will be available to stream worldwide on HBO on October 18.

The Inspection

This is the story of a young gay man who decides to join the marines after many years of homelessness. The story is filmmaker Elegance Bratton’s debut and focuses on their experiences of being kicked out of home as a teen for being gay. Like the character in the film, Bratton also joined the military as a means to support themself after years of struggling and battling homelessness. Featuring Emmy nominated Jeremy Pope as Ellis French and Gabrielle Union as Ellis’ mother, The Inspection is likely to bring many a tear to your eye.
