Uncoupled: chatting with Emerson Brooks and Tuc Watkins

Neil Patrick Harris is back on the small screen in a major role for the first time since his role in How I Met Your Mother. Playing a gay man that gets dumped after seventeen years of monogamy, Uncoupled follows Michael (Neil Patrick Harris) as he learns the ropes of dating in New York City as a single forty-something-year-old man. Tuc Watkins plays Michael’s ex-boyfriend and Emerson Brooks stars as Michael’s gay sidekick. Q+ Magazine had the opportunity to sit down with these delightful men recently to talk all things Uncoupled

So far, the show has received mixed reviews, but whether you love it or hate it, after speaking to Emerson Brooks and Tuc Watkins, one thing is abundantly clear: this project was made with so much love.

Both of these characters are complex in their own ways. Colin (Tuc Watkins) is clearly experiencing some kind of mid-life crisis. He breaks up with Michael at Colin’s own birthday dinner without an explanation as to why he is ending the relationship. After 17 years together, who just walks away for no good reason? That is the question that Michael asks himself repeatedly throughout the show, and while a reason is provided towards the end of the season, it’s not really a good one.

It’s really easy to dislike Colin, but after speaking with Tuc about how he feels about his character, we just don’t want to dislike him anymore. The man is an absolute delight!

Conversely, Billy (Emerson Brooks) is also going through something. Billy is the stereotypical commitment-phobe among their group of friends. Doesn’t like monogamy, and doesn’t want to settle down, despite the fact that he is definitely middle-aged, and folks seem to think that is what he should be trying to do now.

There are moments where we wanted to smack the man throughout this season, but just like with Tuc Watkins, after sitting down and chatting to Brooks about his thoughts and feelings on the show, disliking anything Emerson Brooks does is just not something we are capable of at this point.

These two men adore this show and it is super clear that they poured themselves into this project with their whole heart and soul. Whatever your feelings are for Uncoupled, getting to chat with Emerson Brooks and Tuc Watkins was an absolute treat for us.
