Rob Jetten Makes History as the Netherlands’ Youngest and First Openly Gay Prime Minister
History has officially been made, and yes, it’s a little bit rainbow-colored. Rob Jetten has been sworn in as the Netherlands’ youngest-ever prime minister at just 38 years old, marking a major political milestone for the country and for LGBTQ+ representation across Europe.
Rob Jetten, leader of the social-liberal party Democrats 66 (D66), took the oath of office in a formal ceremony at Huis ten Bosch Palace, overseen by King Willem-Alexander. With this appointment, Rob Jetten not only becomes the youngest head of government in Dutch history, but also the Netherlands’ first openly gay prime minister—a fact that carries undeniable cultural weight.

The new minority coalition government is made up of D66, the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), and the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). Together, the parties hold 66 of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives, meaning Jetten will need to rely heavily on negotiation and bridge-building to pass legislation. And if there’s one thing Dutch politics has made clear in recent years, it’s that coalition survival is never guaranteed. This marks the country’s third new government in just over four years, underscoring just how politically fragmented things have become.
Still, the symbolism of Rob Jetten stepping into this role cannot be overstated. The Netherlands’ leading LGBTQI+ organization, COC, welcomed his appointment, saying: “The new premier can be a role model for people from the rainbow community. It shows that your sexual orientation doesn’t have to matter. That you can become a construction worker, a doctor, a lawyer, and even a prime minister.”
And they’re right. Visibility at this level matters.

Beyond politics, Rob Jetten has also been in the public eye thanks to his relationship with Argentine field hockey player Nicolás Keenan. The couple’s relationship has been widely celebrated online since going public, with many praising their openness and visibility. In a world where LGBTQ+ political leaders are still far too rare, seeing a sitting prime minister confidently sharing his life with his fiancé feels both radical and refreshingly normal.
Politically, Jetten steps into office during what King Willem-Alexander described as “uncertain times.” The government was sworn in just ahead of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and Jetten has pledged to continue strong Dutch support for Kyiv while strengthening national defense amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
But while global security and coalition negotiations will dominate headlines, we can’t ignore what this moment represents socially. Rob Jetten’s rise isn’t just about age or party politics. It’s about progress. It’s about a generation of LGBTQ+ people seeing themselves reflected at the highest level of leadership.
For young queer people across Europe, and frankly, everywhere, Rob Jetten becoming prime minister sends a clear message: your identity does not limit your ambition. And that’s a headline worth celebrating.
