The Disappointments: Season 1 Director’s Cut Drops on YouTube Ahead of Season 2 Premiere

If you’ve been craving a sharp, sexy, emotionally messy queer comedy about figuring out life when you’re no longer 25 (but still very much a disaster), we have excellent news. The Disappointments is officially back in our lives, and it’s returning in a way that feels both nostalgic and brand new.

Ahead of its Season 2 streaming premiere on March 22, the first episode of the Director’s Cut of Season 1 is now available to stream on YouTube. And yes, this isn’t just a simple re-upload: this is a full reimagining.

Created by and starring Rich Burns, The Disappointments is the Humanitas Prize-winning digital series that follows three middle-aged gay best friends as they try (and often fail) to live their best lives. Ray (Rich Burns), Gary (Gedde Watanabe), and James (James Campbell) aren’t twinks navigating their first heartbreak; they’re grown men confronting stalled careers, complicated relationships, and the terrifying realization that adulthood doesn’t magically come with clarity.

Which is exactly why we love them.

The Disappointments: A Director’s Cut That Feels Like a New Show

The Director’s Cut restores the series to full-length episodes, reorders scenes for better flow, and reinserts previously deleted moments, making it richer, sharper, and more emotionally resonant. According to Burns, “What really excited me about this re-edit was being able to go back in and restore the show to full-length episodes—reordering scenes for a better flow, putting back in deleted scenes that I always missed, and expanding moments that were shortened for runtime.

“It plays so much better now. It’s funnier, sexier, and more emotional, and it is more in line with the story I wanted to tell. For both previous viewers and people new to the series, it’s a must-see. It feels like a new show.” He shared.

And honestly? We love it when queer creators get to reclaim their work and present it the way they always envisioned. There’s something deeply powerful about revisiting queer storytelling and giving it room to breathe—especially when it centers middle-aged gay men, a demographic we rarely see explored with this much humor and vulnerability.

New Director’s Cut episodes will drop weekly on Sundays at 10 am PT / 1 pm ET, leading directly into the Season 2 premiere on March 22. So whether you’re revisiting or watching for the first time, you can binge with purpose. Watch the first episode of The Disappointments Season 1 Director’s Cut here:

What’s Coming in The Disappointments Season 2?

If you remember, Season 1 ended on a major cliffhanger: a time jump revealing that Ray and Dwight (Trevor LaPaglia) had broken up with zero explanation, but Burns promises answers: “We ended Season 1 with a big cliffhanger—a time jump, where we see Ray and Dwight were broken up with no explanation. In Season 2, we see what went down between them and what comes next.

“This season will also dive more deeply into the lives and careers of Ray, James, and Gary. We see them in new and challenging work settings, and getting promising opportunities that could help them turn their lives around. I’m really excited for people to see the incredible work our cast and crew have done, and I can’t wait for viewers to meet all the new characters who bring the laughs and conflict and more heart and more drama. Season 2 is definitely a big step up.” He teased.

And from what we know about the upcoming season, the chaos is only escalating. Ray lands a job writing on a girls’ animated series, only to realize he’s painfully out of sync in a Gen-Z writers’ room. Gary steps into the spotlight as a potential talk show co-host while navigating a very unexpected new relationship. Meanwhile, James, freshly licensed in real estate, finds mentorship at a prestigious Beverly Hills firm… which quickly turns complicated when mentorship turns into a kinky sexual affair. Because of course it does.

It’s messy, horny, career-driven, heartbreak-heavy, and very, very gay.

Why This Show Matters

What makes The Disappointments stand out in the LGBTQ+ landscape is its focus on queer men navigating midlife uncertainty. So much queer media fixates on coming-of-age stories— which we adore—but this series asks a different question: what happens after? After the first loves, after the initial self-acceptance, after the big coming-out moment, after we believed we’d “made it.”

Here, queerness isn’t a subplot. It’s baked into their friendships, their careers, their romantic entanglements, and even their disappointments. The show understands that being gay doesn’t protect you from existential crises; it just makes them more fabulous.

With the Director’s Cut giving Season 1 new depth and Season 2 promising higher stakes, sharper conflict, and even more heart, now is the perfect time to jump in and catch up with The Disappointments. Trust us, you won’t be… disappointed. So consider this your official invitation to re-meet (or finally meet) Ray, Gary, and James.
