The Charm Offensive Is Headed to the Big Screen With Nik Dodani Starring
Thankfully, adaptations haven’t dried out; if anything, they just keep coming, and honestly? We’re not mad about it. According to Deadline, Alison Cochrun’s beloved queer rom-com The Charm Offensive is officially being adapted into a feature film, with Nik Dodani set to star as Dev Deshpande, one half of the story’s deeply lovable (and complicated) central romance.
The project is being produced by Alex Liu and Leo Neri, who are teaming up with Marginal MediaWorks to bring the novel to life. Erin Williams and Shawn K. Jain have been tapped to write the screenplay, and based on the early enthusiasm coming from everyone involved, this is shaping up to be one of those adaptations that actually gets why the book resonated so strongly with readers in the first place.
If you’re not familiar with The Charm Offensive, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered (though, truly, you should absolutely go read it). The Charm Offensive is a queer romantic comedy set behind the scenes of a Bachelor-style reality dating show called ‘Ever After.’ But while that premise sounds light and fun, Cochrun’s story goes much deeper than glossy TV drama.
The story follows Dev Deshpande (Nik Dodani), a lead producer on ‘Ever After’ who is brilliant at crafting fairy-tale love stories for television. Off camera, though, Dev is guarded, emotionally exhausted, and struggling with depression in the aftermath of a painful breakup. He believes in love deeply, but he just doesn’t believe it’s something that lasts for him. Then there’s Charlie Winshaw, the show’s newest ‘Prince Charming,’ a former tech wunderkind whose career has imploded spectacularly. Appearing on ‘Ever After’ is a last-ditch PR fix. The problem? He’s painfully awkward, anxious, touch-averse, and deeply uncomfortable in a performative dating environment. Charlie also lives with OCD and anxiety, which makes the constant scrutiny and lack of privacy especially overwhelming.
Dev is assigned to work closely with Charlie, coaching him on how to convincingly date women for the show. What starts as a professional arrangement slowly shifts as Charlie feels safer and more himself around Dev than anyone else, and Dev, in turn, begins to lower the walls he’s kept up for years. As filming unfolds in glossy, globe-trotting locations, their emotional connection deepens, and so does the tension. A romance between the show’s producer and its straight-presenting lead would completely shatter the carefully curated illusion ‘Ever After’ is built on. Dev and Charlie are forced to confront what authenticity really costs when your livelihood depends on selling a very specific fantasy.
Speaking to Deadline, producer Alex Liu shared, “I came across The Charm Offensive as a staff pick in a small-town rural library and read it straight through in one sitting. What struck me wasn’t just how good it was—but also where it was being embraced.” Leo Neri added, “It turns out audiences are drawn to an endearing love story with a liberal dose of smuttiness. Who knew? Erin and Shawn’s adaptation taps into that pleasure, delivering a romantic comedy that’s cinematic and playfully aware of its charm.”
Marginal MediaWorks founder and CEO Sanjay M. Sharma echoed that excitement, saying, “It’s a very fun and heartwarming romantic comedy, at a time when audience demand for authentic, messy and funny LGBTQ stories couldn’t be stronger.” Nik Dodani himself summed it up perfectly, telling Deadline, “No matter how bad things get in the world, it’s a comfort to know we’re always going to have more gay shit to watch.”
Honestly? Preach! We can’t wait to see The Charm Offensive make the jump from page to screen, and as soon as more details drop—from casting updates to release plans—we’ll be right back with everything you need to know. Until then, we’ll be rereading the book, manifesting a release date, and celebrating yet another queer love story getting the big-screen treatment it deserves.
