The Ultimatum: Queer Love Cancelled at Netflix After Two Seasons
It’s not been a good week for LGBTQ+ content, folks. Just days after Hulu pulled the plug on Mid-Century Modern, we’ve now learned that The Ultimatum: Queer Love has been cancelled at Netflix after only two seasons. Yeah, our favorite chaotic reality TV experiment has officially been axed, and we’re really not okay about it.
Reality TV has a special kind of magic. It’s messy, it’s dramatic, and it has the power to create both car-crash moments and heartfelt connections that scripted shows just can’t replicate. And when that chaos comes with an unapologetically queer lens? Even better. That’s why the news of The Ultimatum: Queer Love being cancelled stings so much. It wasn’t just another dating show; it was one of the rare mainstream reality series centered fully on LGBTQ+ relationships, and losing it hurts.
For anyone who missed it, The Ultimatum: Queer Love was part of Netflix’s “Ultimatum” franchise, which kicked off with The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On back in 2022. The original (straight) version is still going strong, with a fourth season on the way, and the brand has even expanded into French and South African spin-offs. But when it came to the sapphic edition? Two seasons and done.

The premise was simple but deliciously chaotic: six couples at a crossroads, one partner ready to marry and the other not quite there. To “solve” things (big emphasis on those quotation marks), they’d break up, date others from the same group, and try out a three-week “trial marriage” with someone new before returning to their original partner. At the end, the decision was clear-cut: marry, break up, or start fresh. Think of it as the gay emotional Hunger Games.
Season 1, which dropped in May 2024, spent two weeks on Netflix’s Top 10. Season 2, released this June in two parts, didn’t reach the global Top 10, though it charted in five individual countries. Honestly, we can’t help but wonder if splitting the season in half hurt its performance, especially since we loved it. The second season delivered everything we hoped for: the drama, the tears, the chaos, and the kind of visibility sapphic love stories deserve. (We even broke our review into two parts because of the release schedule—check those out if you missed them! Part 1 and Part 2!)
The Ultimatum: Queer Love was created by Chris Coelen and produced by Kinetic Content, the same team behind hits like Love Is Blind. But despite its pedigree, it now joins the frustratingly long list of LGBTQ+ shows cancelled too soon.
We get it, reality TV isn’t for everyone. But when certain straight, trashy reality shows run for decades, why can’t queer ones get the same chance to grow and find their audience? And of course, it always feels like sapphic-centered shows are the first to go. We’re exhausted by this pattern, and frankly, we deserve better. Because when it comes to messy, heartfelt, and groundbreaking reality TV, The Ultimatum: Queer Love was doing exactly what it set out to do, and we’ll miss it dearly.
