Overcompensating Renewed: Benito Skinner’s Queer Comedy Returns for Season 2 at Prime Video
No, this isn’t some elaborate campus prank. Overcompensating has officially been renewed for Season 2 at Prime Video. Yep, you read that right: Benito Skinner’s hit comedy is heading back for a second semester.
According to Deadline, which broke the news this morning, the streamer greenlit the renewal on Wednesday after months of speculation. Back in late July, Vernon Sanders, Co-Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, teased Variety that conversations with Skinner and his team were already underway and even confirmed a writers’ room was up and running. Now, the announcement is finally here, and we couldn’t be more excited.
Honestly, it’s not that surprising Overcompensating was renewed. Season 1 was a smash, striking a chord with audiences thanks to its mix of sharp humor, chaotic college nostalgia, and an unfiltered look at the messy, beautiful process of figuring out your identity. For so many queer viewers, Benny’s journey—trying to survive frat culture while finding your people—hit close to home.

Skinner himself shared his excitement about Overcompensating being renewed in a statement on Wednesday, “I have been so overwhelmed by the insane response to the show, and feel so damn lucky to go back to Yates University with Amazon MGM Studios, A24, Strong Baby, and this legendary cast for Season 2!! PLAY SUPER BASS :).”
Sanders also celebrated the renewal, adding, “We look forward to our global Prime Video customers enjoying more of Benito’s captivating and bold storytelling in the second season of Overcompensating. Working alongside the talented teams from A24 and Strong Baby has been a joy for everyone involved, and we are excited to see what hilarious moments Benito has planned for Season 2.”
Created by Skinner, the eight-episode series follows Benny (played by Skinner), a closeted golden boy from Idaho who arrives at the fictional Yates University for his freshman year. Between toxic masculinity, frat parties, emotional repression, and roommate drama, Benny has more than enough to juggle, and he’s not doing it alone. The cast includes Wally Baram as his bestie Carmen, Mary Beth Barone as his sister Grace, and Adam DiMarco (The White Lotus) as Grace’s painfully bro-y boyfriend Peter.

Season 1 left us on a major cliffhanger. Benny finally broke away from his toxic frat, but he was still struggling to come out fully, until Carmen accidentally outed him in front of Grace and Miles during a party meltdown. Season 2 has plenty of questions to answer: Will Benny try to retreat back into the closet? Will he lean into freedom and authenticity? And could a new love interest be waiting just around the corner?
Skinner will continue to write, star, and executive produce the new season. Overcompensating is produced by A24, Strong Baby, and Amazon MGM Studios, with Scott King serving as showrunner. Executive producers include Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, Ali Goodwin, Josh Bachove, Daniel Gray Longino, and none other than Charli XCX, who also acts as the series’ executive music producer.
Class is officially back in session, and we’re ready for whatever chaos Season 2 of Overcompensating brings.
