Aubrey Anderson-Emmons Comes Out as Bisexual
We’ve always known Modern Family was ahead of its time when it came to queer representation, and now, life is imitating art in the most heartwarming way. Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played Lily Tucker-Pritchett—the quick-witted daughter of Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet)—for nine seasons, has come out as bisexual, and honestly? We’re cheering from the sidelines.
Anderson-Emmons took to TikTok and Instagram to share the news in a way that couldn’t be more perfect. In the clip, she lip-synchs to audio from a classic Modern Family moment, the Season 4 episode “The Future Dunphys,” where Lily confidently announces, “I’m gay! I’m gay!” It’s a line that, in the episode, stems from some childhood confusion—Lily assumes that because her dads are gay, she must be too. But here in 2025, Aubrey uses it as a joyful and affirming declaration of her own identity. “People keep joking so much abt me being gay when I literally am (I’m bi),” she wrote in the caption. “Happy pride month to all and to all a goodnight hehehe.”
It’s a delightful full-circle moment that feels especially meaningful during Pride Month. Seeing someone who grew up on our screens now embrace her queerness so openly is the kind of representation that genuinely matters. Aubrey might have started as Lily when she was just four years old, but today, she’s stepping into her own spotlight, not just as an actress, but as a singer, too.
Under the name Frances Anderson, she dropped her debut single Telephones and Traffic in May, and she’s already teasing more music. Her next track, Don’t Forget Me, is set to release on June 27. Just in time to close out Pride Month with a bang.
We’ve always said it: no one owes anyone a public coming out—especially not celebrities. Queerness is personal, and how or when someone chooses to share that part of themselves (if ever) is entirely up to them. But when young stars like Aubrey do decide to speak up, it creates a ripple effect that can’t be overstated. It helps normalize queer identities, opens doors for others, and builds safer, more welcoming spaces for the next generation. We’re proud of her for owning her truth so publicly, and even prouder to see her stepping into her artistry and identity on her own terms. Here’s to more music, more joy, and more moments like this.
