Karan Soni & Jonathan Groff Shine in ‘A Nice Indian Boy’ Trailer

One of the films we’re most excited to cover this year, the rom-com A Nice Indian Boy, has finally dropped its first trailer, and we’re absolutely stoked about it! Directed by Roshan Sethi and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play of the same name, this heartfelt romantic comedy promises to bring all the feels while exploring cultural identity, family expectations, and the power of love.

The story follows Naveen Gavaskar (Karan Soni), a socially reserved doctor, and his boyfriend Jay Kurundkar (Jonathan Groff), a white orphan artist raised by an Indian family. When Naveen decides it’s time to introduce Jay to his parents, Megha (Zarna Garg) and Archit (Harish Patel), things don’t go as smoothly as planned. The family must come to terms with Jay’s presence and help the couple plan their Indian wedding, leading to a heartfelt and often hilarious journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

According to early critics, A Nice Indian Boy is drawing comparisons to Bollywood classics like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, offering a contemporary take on romance, family, and cultural differences while staying true to the vibrant and colorful dynamics of Indian culture. And the first trailer gives us exactly that! We get a glimpse of Naveen and Jay’s sweet love story, how they met, and the challenges they face together. It teases a mix of heartfelt moments, comedic family interactions, and a stunning celebration of love in all its forms. Oh, and of course, there’s music and dance—because what would a love story be without a little Bollywood magic?

But don’t take our word for it, check it out in the trailer below.

Beyond the already star-studded lead duo, the film also features a talented supporting cast, including Sunita Mani as Naveen’s sister, along with Peter S. Kim and Sas Goldberg. With a story that tackles the ups and downs of cultural identity, family pressures, and personal authenticity, A Nice Indian Boy is shaping up to be a must-watch for rom-com lovers.

The film made a splash at its world premiere during the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and later earned praise at the BFI London Film Festival for its sharp, witty dialogue and thoughtful exploration of LGBTQ+ themes within the framework of a traditional Indian family. Its humor and emotional depth have already struck a chord with audiences, especially in how it navigates the concept of acceptance within cultural traditions.

Produced by Renee Witt, Charlie McSpadden, Justin Baldoni, and Andrew Calof, with executive producers including Madhuri Shekar, Karan Soni, and Mindy Kaling, the film is already garnering attention for its fresh take on blending cultures and personal identity in a romantic comedy format. And with a gorgeous soundtrack by Raashi Kulkarni, A Nice Indian Boy is set to be an unforgettable celebration of love, family, and finding where you truly belong.

We can’t wait to see this one on the big screen!
