Stephen Fry talks about his role in the Red White and Royal Blue movie

It’s no secret that Casey McQuiston’s ever popular queer rom-com novel Red, White and Royal Blue is currently being adapted to the screen by Amazon Studios. Filming has been underway in London since June, and is slated to wrap sometime during the month of August. Stephen Fry is finally talking about his role in the upcoming movie!

In yet another slight alteration from the original storyline, Stephen Fry will be playing the role of the King – Prince Henry’s grandfather. In the novel, the character that lords themself all over Henry’s love life is the Queen. This means that Amazon Studio made the decision to gender swap the characters for the film adaptation.

The studio kept a lid on the casting information for a long time and even after making announcements, certain actors were not allowed to reveal which character they were playing. It has come to light lately though that some controversial decisions were made, and some characters were combined with others, while it remains to be seen if some of the beloved characters will make it into the story at all. So this decision to make the Queen a King seems on brand.

Stephen Fry recently told Logo that he really enjoyed his single day of filming with the Red, White and Royal Blue crew.

“I had a marvelous day working with them, and I think it’ll be something rather special. It’s funny and charming, but also truthful and touching,” said Fry.

He went on to provide his thoughts about the shape of queer television in recent times.

“I don’t know if you agree with me, but queer stories have kind of come of age, in a way. We’re still proud to tell them. We’re still anxious to see them and hungry for different aspects of gay experience and gay life, but there’s a confidence and a swagger about it that I find divine.”

Stephen Fry is currently starring in Netflix’s Sandman. Prior to this, he voiced the role of the principal at Truham Boys Grammar in Heartstopper
