Pet Shop Boys Release A Man from the Future, a Musical Tribute to Alan Turing

Pet Shop Boys are revisiting the life and legacy of one of the most influential LGBTQ+ figures in modern history with A Man from the Future, a new eight-track album created in collaboration with mathematician and Alan Turing biographer Andrew Hodges. Released today, October 9, the project brings together electronic music, orchestral arrangements, and spoken-word narration to tell the story of a man whose groundbreaking work changed the world, even as he faced persecution for being gay.

The British duo, made up of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, first developed the musical composition with Hodges in 2012 and 2013, performing it with the BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Singers at the BBC Proms in 2014. More than a decade later, they have reworked the piece with a stronger electronic sound and a more intimate orchestral arrangement, produced alongside German composer Sven Helbig.

Across its eight tracks, A Man from the Future follows Turing from his school days and early interest in mathematics through his studies at Cambridge, his crucial work breaking German military codes during World War II, and his pioneering ideas about computing and artificial intelligence. The album also confronts the devastating consequences of the homophobic laws under which Turing was prosecuted for his relationship with another man, a conviction that led to chemical treatment and preceded his death in 1954.

Actress Juliet Stevenson narrates passages adapted from Hodges’ acclaimed biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma, giving the album a historical dimension alongside its music. Its closing track also incorporates former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s 2009 apology for the treatment Turing endured, followed by the account of his posthumous royal pardon in 2013. Together, these moments connect Turing’s personal history with the world his ideas helped shape and the injustice that defined much of his final years.

Pet Shop Boys explained the motivation behind the project in a statement: “Our motive in creating this work was to make a musical memorial to Alan Turing who gave so much to his country and the world and was rewarded for it by being prosecuted for his sexuality.”

Turing’s legacy extends far beyond his contributions to mathematics and computing. As a gay man punished by the very country he helped defend, his story remains a painful reminder of the human cost of institutionalized homophobia. His ideas about intelligent machines also feel especially relevant today, as artificial intelligence continues to reshape our lives. The album’s title reflects how far ahead of his time Turing was, both professionally and personally, including his hope for a future in which being gay would be accepted as normal.

With A Man from the Future, Pet Shop Boys bring renewed attention to a remarkable LGBTQ+ trailblazer whose influence continues to reach into the present. The album is out now via Parlophone Records on vinyl, CD, Blu-ray audio, and digital platforms. Don’t miss it!
