Pride 2026: A Q+ Celebration

June 16

Prayers for Bobby

Some films leave an impact long after the credits roll, and Prayers for Bobby is one of them. Based on the true story of Bobby Griffith, the film follows a young gay man growing up in a deeply religious family whose struggle for acceptance is shaped by his mother Mary’s (Sigourney Weaver) unwavering belief that homosexuality is sinful. As Bobby (Ryan Kelley) grapples with the rejection he experiences at home, the emotional consequences become increasingly devastating.

What makes the film so powerful is that it doesn’t end with tragedy. After Bobby’s death, Mary begins a painful process of questioning the beliefs she once held so tightly. As she learns more about LGBTQ+ people and reflects on her relationship with her son, she undergoes a profound transformation that ultimately leads her to become an advocate for queer youth and their families. Weaver’s performance as Mary remains one of the most celebrated aspects of the film and gives emotional weight to every stage of that journey.

More than fifteen years after its release, Prayers for Bobby continues to resonate with audiences because of its message about acceptance, empathy, and the real-world consequences of rejection. It’s a difficult watch at times, but it’s also an important one. Pride Month is often about celebration, but it’s also about remembering the stories that helped change hearts and minds, and Prayers for Bobby remains one of the most impactful examples.

Where to watch? Prayers for Bobby is available to stream on Hulu, Disney+ and Hoopla. It’s also available to rent or buy on Apple TV and Prime Video.

Please Like Me

Few shows capture the chaos of your twenties quite like Please Like Me. Created by and starring Josh Thomas, the Australian comedy-drama follows Josh, a young gay man whose life is thrown into upheaval when he comes out, moves into a new stage of adulthood, and finds himself helping care for his mother as she navigates serious mental health struggles. What begins as an offbeat comedy gradually evolves into something much richer and more emotionally complex.

One of the show’s greatest strengths is its honesty. Please Like Me isn’t interested in presenting perfect characters or tidy life lessons. Instead, it embraces the messiness of friendships, relationships, family dynamics, and mental health. The characters make mistakes, hurt each other, grow, backslide, and try again, often in ways that feel remarkably true to life. Through it all, the series balances sharp humor with moments of genuine vulnerability.

More than a decade after its debut, Please Like Me remains one of the most beloved queer series of the 2010s. Funny, heartbreaking, and deeply human, it’s a show that understands that growing up rarely happens in a straight line. If you’ve somehow missed it until now, Pride Month is the perfect time to finally give it a watch.

Where to watch? Please Like Me is available to buy or rent on Apple TV and Prime Video.

Les Normaux by Janine Janssen and S. Al Sabado

Sometimes the best love stories begin with an awkward first encounter. In Les Normaux, Sébastien has just moved to a magical version of Paris hoping for a fresh start. A demisexual young man studying magic, he’s trying to leave some personal troubles behind and focus on building a new life. That plan becomes considerably more complicated when he discovers that the handsome vampire he impulsively kissed the night before is actually his new neighbor.

That vampire is Elia: charming, impossibly attractive, and very difficult to stop thinking about. As the two grow closer, their relationship develops alongside a vibrant cast of supernatural friends that includes witches, werewolves, magical creatures, and plenty of other lovable oddballs. Rather than relying on high-stakes battles or world-ending threats, Les Normaux focuses on friendship, romance, community, and the everyday joys and anxieties of finding your place in the world.

Part fantasy adventure, part queer romance, and part slice-of-life comedy, Les Normaux has earned a devoted following thanks to its warmth, humor, and inclusive representation. As we noted in our review of the second volume, the series excels at creating a gentle, welcoming world where queer characters are allowed to fall in love, make mistakes, and support one another. It’s charming, magical, and incredibly easy to fall in love with.

Where to buy? Les Normaux Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 are available to purchase at all reputable booksellers.
