Weapons of Mass Seduction Is Bringing Queer Chaos, Punk Rock, and Political Satire to NYC Pride
This Pride Month, New York theatergoers will have the chance to experience a new musical that is aiming to be as outrageous as it is unapologetically queer. Weapons of Mass Seduction, a punk-rock-disco satire created by Matt Bond, is set to make its debut with a developmental run at Culture Lab LIC from June 17–21, offering audiences an early look at a production that blends camp, politics, and LGBTQ+ themes into one explosive package.
Set in a chaotic version of the near future, Weapons of Mass Seduction centers on President Karen Blare, a larger-than-life political figure whose administration becomes entangled in scandals, culture wars, and increasingly absurd attempts to maintain power. At the center of the story is Dr. Victor Vexx, a genderfluid scientist whose long-dormant genius becomes the key to a controversial government project inspired by one of the strangest real-life military proposals ever conceived: the so-called “gay bomb.”
While the premise sounds delightfully ridiculous—and it absolutely is—the musical uses its over-the-top storytelling to tackle timely conversations about identity, power, fear, and the ways governments and institutions attempt to control both bodies and personal freedoms. Wrapped in a score that pulls from punk rock, disco, and queer nightlife culture, the show leans into absurdity while keeping its focus firmly on the communities and experiences at the heart of its story.

“This show was born out of equal parts rage, fascination, and laughter at the increasingly surreal world we’re all living in,” creator Matt Bond said. “At its core, Weapons of Mass Seduction is about fear—fear of difference, fear of freedom, fear of losing control—and how those fears can be manipulated by people in power. But it’s also wildly funny, unapologetically queer, and designed to feel like a chaotic underground party you never want to leave.”
That combination of camp spectacle and political commentary is also what attracted director Nathalie Marrable to the project. According to Marrable, beneath the musical’s larger-than-life humor is a story that speaks directly to ongoing conversations around identity and resistance.
“Underneath all the camp and satire is a story about identity and resistance,” Marrable said. “This musical asks what happens when governments try to control not only bodies, but desire itself. Pride Month felt like the perfect time to unleash this piece because it celebrates queerness while also challenging audiences to think critically about the political machinery surrounding it. It’s outrageous, heartfelt, and unlike anything else on stage right now.”

Leading the production is Jalen Bunch as Dr. Victor Vexx, alongside Pearl Emerson as President Karen Blare, Ryan Kennedy as Private Ryan Seacrest, and James Wei-Yuan Wong as Prime Minister Chapeau/Dr. Graham. For Bunch, the opportunity to portray Vexx has been particularly meaningful because of the character’s complexity and connection to conversations happening throughout the LGBTQ+ community today.
“Dr. Vexx is one of the most exciting characters I’ve ever had the chance to play,” Bunch said. “They’re brilliant, dangerous, vulnerable, revolutionary, and completely unpredictable. The show uses comedy and music to explore real conversations about gender, identity, and power, and I think audiences—especially queer audiences—are going to see pieces of themselves in it while also having an absolute blast.”
Before the developmental run begins, audiences can also catch a special preview concert on June 10 at House of Yes, offering an early glimpse at the music and mayhem that Weapons of Mass Seduction has in store.
With its blend of queer rebellion, political satire, and high-energy musical theater, Weapons of Mass Seduction is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing additions to this year’s Pride Month arts calendar. If you’re looking for a show that promises equal parts laughter, chaos, and commentary, tickets for the June 17–21 run at Culture Lab LIC are available now.
