La Bola Negra Trailer Gives Us a New Look at Los Javis’ Queer Spanish Epic

After giving us a glimpse of La Bola Negra with its teaser trailer a few weeks ago, we now have the official La Bola Negra trailer, and it gives us an even closer look at the highly anticipated new film from Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, better known as Los Javis.

The new trailer arrives fresh off a major festival run for the Spanish film. La Bola Negra recently won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Audience Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, adding two new major audience prizes to its growing list of accolades, and has been selected as Spain’s official submission for the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.

And now, we get to see a little more of what Los Javis have created.

Set across nearly a century of Spanish history, La Bola Negra follows three generations of men whose lives become connected through desire, pain, and love. The new trailer gives us glimpses into each of their stories: Carlos (Milo Quifes) longs to belong in a fractured Spain, Sebastián (Guitarricadelafuente) finds a connection across enemy lines, and Alberto (Carlos González) begins uncovering a long-buried family secret that brings buried truths back into the light.

The queer connection between these stories is impossible to miss. Carlos, Sebastián, and Alberto are three gay men living in three very different moments of Spanish history, with their experiences reflecting the ways desire, identity, repression, love, and family secrets can travel across generations. The film moves between 1932, 1937, and 2017, allowing these lives to inform one another even when separated by decades.

The trailer is also another chance to take in the film’s absolutely stacked ensemble. Alongside Guitarricadelafuente, Quifes, and González, we get glimpses of Miguel Bernardeau, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close. Guitarricadelafuente also provides the music for the trailer with “La Nieve,” an original song he wrote for the film.

La Bola Negra is already playing in theaters in Spain and will begin its theatrical rollout in the United States on October 16, opening in New York City and Los Angeles before expanding to additional markets. The film will then arrive on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada on December 2.
