Fellow Travelers: Matt Bomer’s new show

Showtime has announced the development of a new queer show, Fellow Travelers, featuring none other than one of our favorites here at Q+: Matt Bomer. Based on a novel by Thomas Mallon, Fellow Travelers follows the lives of two gay men through several decades of American history.

Matt Bomer will play Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller in the eight episode series. Ron Nyswaner, who wrote the screenplay for Philadelphia has signed on to adapt the novel and is also slated to executive produce the show. Bomer and Robbie Rogers are also executive producing the project. Little additional fact? Rogers was the first openly gay man to compete in a North American professional sports league, and he represented the country at the Beijing Olympics in 2018.

According to Variety, “Bomer will play handsome, charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements – until he meets Tim Laughlin, a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith.”

“Over the course of four decades, Hawk and Tim cross paths through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco hedonism of the 1970s and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, while facing obstacles in the world and in themselves.”

According to Showtime, “The series delivers us directly into an insider world of Washington rife with national consequences, while drawing out the intimate moments that are profoundly personal and often heartbreaking. We are beyond thrilled to have Ron, Matt, Robbie and Daniel take us on this suspenseful and romantic journey.”

Matt Bomer officially came out in 2012 at an awards show where he publicly thanked his partner and their three children in his acceptance speech. We’re excited to see him in a new gay role, reppin’ and embodying the community.

Production is slated to begin in July this year, and honestly? We can’t wait to watch!
