La Bola Negra in theaters this October before Netflix debut in December

After it was announced back in June that Netflix had acquired the U.S. distribution rights for La Bola Negra, the streaming giant has now confirmed exactly when audiences will get to watch the highly anticipated Spanish drama. La Bola Negra will begin its U.S. theatrical release on October 16, 2026, before arriving on Netflix on December 2, 2026.

The release strategy gives the film nearly seven weeks on the big screen before it joins Netflix’s catalog, an increasingly uncommon approach for the streamer and one we’re always happy to see. While many Netflix films receive only brief theatrical engagements to qualify for awards consideration, a longer exclusive run gives audiences a genuine opportunity to experience ambitious films the way they were intended. We hope this is something Netflix continues embracing because cinema deserves to be celebrated both in theaters and at home.

The announcement comes alongside more exciting news for the film. Netflix has also acquired the Canadian distribution rights, and La Bola Negra has officially been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the festival’s prestigious Special Presentations lineup. The celebration will continue for the creative team as Penélope Cruz is also set to receive a Special Tribute Award during the TIFF Tribute Awards.

Directed, co-written and produced by acclaimed Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi—better known internationally as Los Javis—La Bola Negra has already built considerable momentum on the festival circuit. The sweeping drama made a strong impression during its Cannes premiere, where Los Javis shared the festival’s Best Director prize, further cementing their reputation as two of Spain’s most exciting contemporary filmmakers.

Spanning nearly a century of Spanish history, La Bola Negra follows three generations of men whose lives become deeply intertwined through desire, pain, and love. That premise alone makes it one of the LGBTQ+ films we’re most looking forward to this year, promising an expansive queer story that stretches across decades while exploring how identity, relationships, and family legacies echo from one generation to the next.

The film also brings together an impressive international cast. Spanish music star Guitarricadelafuente makes his acting debut alongside Elite star Miguel Bernardeau, with Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close rounding out the ensemble. Los Javis co-wrote the screenplay with Alberto Conejero.
