Netflix Wins Bid for Los Javis’ Cannes-Winning LGBTQ+ Epic ‘La Bola Negra’
One of the year’s most acclaimed LGBTQ+ films is officially headed to Netflix. Following a competitive bidding war, the streamer has secured the U.S. rights to La Bola Negra, the Cannes-winning epic from Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known collectively as Los Javis.
The film will receive a theatrical release in the United States on November 6, 2026, before making its Netflix debut on December 4.
For those unfamiliar with Los Javis, the duo has become two of the most influential LGBTQ+ storytellers working in Spanish-language entertainment. Their previous projects, including Veneno, Paquita Salas, and La Mesías, have earned international acclaim for their distinctive blend of heartfelt storytelling, sharp humor, and unapologetically queer perspectives. Now, with La Bola Negra, they are bringing their most ambitious story yet to audiences around the world.
The sweeping drama was one of the breakout titles of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where Los Javis took home the Best Director prize. Since its premiere, the film has been widely praised by critics and audiences alike for its emotional scope and its exploration of memory, love, legacy, and queer identity.

According to the official synopsis, La Bola Negra is a bold triptych spanning nearly a century of Spanish history, from the 1930s to the present day. The story follows three men whose lives become intimately connected through desire, pain, and inheritance, creating a multigenerational portrait of queer experience across different eras.
“When we began writing La Bola Negra, we wanted to tell a story about freedom, legacy, and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility,” Los Javis said in a joint statement. “Above all, we wanted to honor the generations of people whose courage and sacrifice made our freedoms possible today.”
The filmmakers also expressed their excitement about partnering with Netflix for the film’s U.S. release. “We couldn’t imagine a better home than Netflix to bring this story to audiences across the United States,” they said. “We are deeply grateful and excited that its message will reach millions of viewers and help carry Federico García Lorca’s legacy to audiences around the world.”
The film takes its name from an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca, one of Spain’s most influential poets and playwrights. Lorca, whose work and life have long held a special place within queer cultural history, was assassinated in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Through a contemporary lens, La Bola Negra explores his legacy while connecting it to modern conversations about LGBTQ+ visibility and identity.

The ambitious production features an impressive international cast led by Spanish music sensation Guitarricadelafuente in his acting debut and Élite star Miguel Bernardeau. They are joined by Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close.
The screenplay was co-written by Los Javis and Alberto Conejero. The film is a Movistar Plus+ Original produced in collaboration with Suma Content Films, with world sales handled by Goodfellas.
Beyond its Cannes success, La Bola Negra also marks another major chapter in the story of Los Javis themselves. Although Calvo and Ambrossi publicly announced their divorce in 2025 after more than 15 years together, including seven years of marriage, they have continued their creative partnership. Their collaboration remains one of the most important creative forces in contemporary LGBTQ+ storytelling, and La Bola Negra stands as further proof of the artistic vision they continue to share.
With a major festival victory already under its belt and Netflix preparing to bring the film to millions of viewers, La Bola Negra is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated queer releases of the year—and another powerful addition to Los Javis’ growing legacy.
