Medical Examiner Rules Death of Nex Benedict a Suicide

In the aftermath of the devastating loss of non-binary teen Nex Benedict, we find ourselves grappling with the latest developments in this heart-wrenching case. Just last month, we shared the sorrowful news of Nex’s collapse at home, a day following an altercation at their high school in Owasso, Oklahoma. Yesterday, on Wednesday, March 13, the state’s chief medical examiner concluded that Nex’s death was a suicide, sparking a wave of outcry and anguish across the nation.

Nex’s story struck a chord with countless individuals, not only in Owasso but across the world. Their use of they/them pronouns, along with the reported bullying they endured, underscored the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ youth in schools today. The revelation from the medical examiner’s office, detailing a combination of antihistamine and antidepressant toxicity in Nex’s system, has only deepened the sense of sorrow and frustration surrounding this tragedy.

The handling of Nex’s case by authorities has drawn sharp criticism from LGBTQ+ activists, who argue that the state’s response reflects a broader failure to protect vulnerable students. With tensions already high, the summary autopsy report’s release following a contentious school board meeting has only served to amplify calls for justice and accountability.

GLAAD, for instance, criticized the autopsy report, stating that “there is nothing in this one-page document to explain why the medical examiner checked a box.” Their President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, urging media outlets to continue questioning official narratives.

Similarly, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nex’s passing. In a statement, HRC highlighted the heartbreaking nature of the case, emphasizing that “young people in Oklahoma and across the country deserve to be safe and respected at school.”

As we await the release of the full autopsy report (expected in 10 days), our hearts ache for Nex’s family and loved ones, as well as for LGBTQ+ youth who continue to face adversity in their daily lives. Regardless of the outcome of this investigation, Nex’s passing serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to protect and support trans kids in our communities.

We’ll keep you updated as more information about this case unfolds. It’s our promise to our readers to shed light on the truth behind Nex’s tragic passing. Let’s stand together in solidarity and compassion, offering support to those in need during this challenging time. Above all, let’s reaffirm our dedication to protecting and uplifting LGBTQ+ youth, ensuring they feel valued, respected, and loved.
