Jonathan Bailey Wins Big at Critics Choice Awards

Awards Season is here and some LGBTQ+ folks are starting to get some well-deserved recognition. Last night it was the turn of one of our absolute favorites, Jonathan Bailey, who won the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made For Television for Fellow Travelers at the 29th Critics Choice Awards!

In a nod to the show’s many steamy moments, Bailey started his speech with a grin and a cheeky shoutout to his co-star and on-screen love interest Matt Bomer: “I share this with you Matt, those of you who have seen Fellow Travelers will know that Matt and I come together.”

But then, the speech took a heartfelt turn, acknowledging the impact of the show’s storyline. “For many, it’s an education, but for us, it’s a vital truth.” He said, “This series is a much-needed reminder that LGBTQ+ people have always existed, mostly hidden, they have always been fighting for an easier life for the generation that follows. So I thank those who came before me, who created a world where I can stand here today and win an award for telling their story.”

Bailey continued to express his gratitude, saying, “The character I play, Tim, I’ll carry him forever. His love story with Hawk teaches us to tell the special people in our lives we love them before it’s too late. So, my special friends and family, I love you very much.”

Adding a sweet shoutout to his supportive 93-year-old nana, Bailey continued, “I love you my 93-year-old nana who took me to the theatre when I was five and gave me a vocation, and who watched Fellow Travelers to the climax! I’m so proud of you and I’m bringing this trophy back to you and a cup of tea on Tuesday.”

Bailey wrapped up his speech by sharing some love for his Fellow Travelers family and dedicating the award to the LGBTQ+ community: “To my Fellow Travelers family, to all the people who lost their lives in the 80s and 90s and to every LGBTQ+ person living in a bigoted community which still surrounds us this is for you.”

*virtual standing ovation*

We’re honestly over the moon that Bailey is getting the recognition he deserves. As we said in our review of the show, his portrayal of Tim is a poignant masterpiece, so it’s music to our ears that others seem to agree.

So, hats off, Mr. Bailey! Here’s to more wins, more stories that hit us right in the feels, and a future where LGBTQ+ voices continue to shine bright on and off the screen.
