‘Heartstopper Forever’ Announces Major Recasting as Finale Film Adds Two New Cast Members

We’ve got some last-minute Friday news to send us spiraling (in the best way) back into our Heartstopper feelings. Heartstopper Forever, aka the upcoming film set to close out the beloved queer coming-of-age TV universe, has just confirmed two new additions to its cast, and one of them comes with a pretty major shake-up: a recasting.

In an exclusive interview with Netflix’s Tudum, creator and writer Alice Oseman revealed that Anna Maxwell Martin and Derek Jacobi are joining the film, which will reunite much of the original cast for one final chapter. But let’s get straight to the headline-making moment: this casting announcement also confirms a recasting that many fans may have anticipated, but still hits hard.

Anna Maxwell Martin will be stepping into the role of Sarah Nelson, Nick’s (Kit Connor) mom, originally portrayed by Olivia Colman in the first two seasons of Heartstopper. It’s a character deeply embedded in the emotional core of the series, especially within Nick’s journey as a bisexual teen navigating identity, love, and vulnerability. Who could forget that tender, internet-breaking scene when Nick comes out to his mom? Yeah, we’re still not over it either.

Oseman opened up about the decision to recast the role rather than write Sarah out of the story altogether, emphasizing just how vital she is to Nick’s arc in this final chapter: “When beginning to work on the Heartstopper Forever screenplay, I knew how important it was that Sarah, Nick’s mum, appeared in the story. Since Season 1, we have seen how close Nick is with his mum; she’s one of the few people he can turn to in moments of crisis. While in Season 3, we were able to tweak the story to avoid any appearance of Sarah, it felt nonsensical for her to be absent from this final chapter, given some of the emotional struggles Nick faces. Sadly, Olivia Colman was not able to join us for the film, so we made the very difficult decision to recast the role, rather than exclude the character.”

She also made sure to honor Colman’s impact on the series, while welcoming Martin into the Heartstopper family: “We are deeply grateful for Olivia’s beautiful performance as Sarah in Seasons 1 and 2 of Heartstopper, through such iconic moments as Nick coming out as bisexual, and we know that her performance will live on in the hearts of every Heartstopper fan. We are overjoyed to welcome the incredible Anna Maxwell Martin into the role of Sarah for Heartstopper Forever. Anna perfectly embodies Sarah’s gentle, down-to-earth energy, and it was magical to witness her scenes with Kit Connor during the film shoot. I can’t wait for Heartstopper fans to experience her interpretation of Sarah Nelson.”

Derek Jacobi will also appear in the film in a cameo role, adding even more prestige to a project that already means so much to its audience.

As we prepare to say goodbye to Nick, Charlie (Joe Locke), and the rest of the Truham and Higgs squad, it’s reassuring to know that one of the series’ most important relationships—that between Nick and his mom—will remain part of the story. The decision to recast rather than erase Sarah speaks volumes about how central that bond is, especially within a narrative that has always treated queer identity with care, warmth, and authenticity.

Of course, we won’t pretend it doesn’t sting a little not to see Olivia Colman return. Her portrayal of Sarah gave us one of the most affirming parental figures in recent LGBTQ+ storytelling. But we’re also genuinely excited to see what Anna Maxwell Martin brings to the role as this story reaches its final chapter.

So, how are we feeling about this Heartstopper Forever recasting news? Are we ready to embrace a new Sarah Nelson as we head into the finale?
