Heartbreak High Takes a Final Bow With A Third Season

Today is a good day! Netflix has just announced that their Australian teen drama Heartbreak High is being renewed for a third and final season.  Starring the very best of Australia’s young talent right now, the show, which is a remake of a popular television drama in Australia from the 1990s, garnered instant success for its representations of Gen Z, sexuality, and racial diversity. This final bow comes on the heels of a very dramatic season two closer!

Very little information is known at this time about the third and final season, just that it’s definitely happening. And honestly, we couldn’t be happier. Season two tackled so many issues: toxic masculinity, young love and relationships, queer identities, and trauma, just to name a few. However, as the credits rolled on the last episode of the season, it was unclear whether a third season was even being considered.

There are so many story arcs to be resolved at this time. As the remnants of toxic masculinity quite literally brought the Hartley High campus to the ground at the end of season two, the question now becomes: where will the kids go to school? In this final bow, will we get to see Quinnie (Chloe Hayden) fulfill her role as school Captain now that there isn’t actually a school? If the students disperse to neighboring schools, this opens up the possibility for new characters. But as the season positions itself as the third and final season, this seems like an ominous move.

And what about Malakai (Thomas Weatherall)? He took off and followed his mother to Switzerland, sporting a broken heart and unresolved feelings for Amerie (Ayesha Madon). The big question at the forefront of our hearts and minds is, as Hartley High takes its final bow once and for all, what happens now with Ca$h (Will McDonald) and Darren (James Majoos)? Will love be enough to resolve the massive hurdle that lives between them? Can someone who is asexual be in a committed relationship with someone who is very much a sexual being?

(Shoutout to Will McDonald and James Majoos for chatting with us about this very issue here).

Questions, questions, questions. So very many questions!
