Cassandro’s inspiring journey will come to life this September on Prime Video
Prime Video has just released the trailer, poster, and some new stills for its upcoming feature film Cassandro, the biopic inspired by the life and career of legendary Lucha Libre wrestler Saúl “Cassandro” Armendáriz.
Cassandro is an iconic figure in the world of Lucha Libre, celebrated for both his dazzling in-ring performances and his inspiring journey outside the squared circle. Hailing from a modest background, Cassandro’s life story is a testament to the human spirit’s boundless resilience.
In the ring, Cassandro soared to stardom with a unique blend of high-flying acrobatics and flamboyant costumes that captivated audiences worldwide. His in-ring charisma was matched only by his determination to break down gender barriers in the predominantly male domain of Lucha Libre. Cassandro’s presence in the sport became a symbol of empowerment, proving that talent and passion could overcome societal norms.
Beyond the spotlight, Cassandro faced numerous personal and physical challenges that would have deterred most. Yet, he emerged stronger from each setback, becoming an inspiration to those who encountered prejudice or adversity. Directed by Academy Award® winner Roger Ross Williams, and written by David Teague and Roger Ross Williams, Cassandro will have Mexican actor and producer Gael García Bernal in the lead role, and will also feature: Roberta Colindrez, Perla De La Rosa, Joaquín Cosío, and Raúl Castillo with special appearances from El Hijo del Santo and Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (yeah, Bad Bunny y’all).

According to Prime video, Cassandro will follow the life of “Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso, who rises to international stardom after he creates the character ‘Cassandro,’ the “Liberace of Lucha Libre.” In the process, he upends not just the macho wrestling world, but also his own life.”
Cassandro is not just a Lucha Libre legend but a true symbol of resilience, breaking boundaries in and out of the ring, and inspiring generations with his remarkable journey.
