Jonathan Bailey cast to play Matt Bomer’s love interest in Fellow Travelers
Back in May, 2022, it was announced that the delightful Matt Bomer had been cast to play an openly queer character in Showtime’s upcoming limited series Fellow Travelers. Now, Showtime has announced that none other than Jonathan Bailey from Netflix’s smash hit Bridgerton has joined the cast to play Bomer’s love interest. Fellow Travelers is a 20th century gay romance set on the backdrop of political Washington DC based off the novel of the same name by author Thomas Mallon.
We already know that Matt Bomer will play the character of Hawkins Fuller. He is somewhat of a well to do behind the scenes kind of guy in the political landscape in Washington DC. Focused on work, Hawkins is known to avoid all emotional entanglements until Tim Laughlin stumbles into his life.
Enter Jonathan Bailey, who is now slated to play Tim Laughlin. Interestingly, Laughlin is a religious sort of fellow and is very devoted to his faith. The graduate of the prestigious Fordham University’s life takes quite an unexpected turn when he stumbles into Hawkins Fuller’s life.
The story takes place during a particularly tumultuous time to be a gay man in the United States of America. The story starts just as Joseph McCarthy, in conjunction with prosecutor Roy Cohn, wage political war in the United States. Fellow Travelers follows the two men over the span of a whopping four decades through the Vietnam war, into the 60s, and through the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.
After the news broke, in what can only be described as an adorable display of excitement and affection for each other, Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey took to their Instagram accounts to comment on the announcement.
Bomer wrote: “I’ve been holding this one close to the vest for a minute. I could not be more excited to be sharing the experience of Fellow Travelers with an actor I respect and admire more than I can say, @jbayleaf. And the brilliant Allison Williams @aw! I’m so grateful that this story is in their hands – and I can’t wait to tell it alongside them.”
Jonathan Bailey’s announcement read: “Epic story. Incredible team. THRILLED to be on board.”
Matt Bomer replied: “So excited and grateful to be working with you in this!”
We don’t think the internet is ready to see these two play lovers on screen!
Fellow Travelers is scheduled to begin filming in Toronto later this month. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram for all queer stuff!
