La Bola Negra Teaser Trailer Takes Us Across Queer Spanish History

It’s finally here! Ahead of its theatrical release across the United States, the first La Bola Negra teaser trailer has officially dropped, and somehow, even in just a couple of minutes, it gives us a pretty good idea of why Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s latest film made such a powerful impression when it premiered to critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

The new teaser gives us our first proper look at a film that refuses to tell just one story. Instead, La Bola Negra moves across nearly a century of Spanish history, connecting three generations of men through desire, love, pain, and the queer histories that survive even when people try to erase them.

And yes, the La Bola Negra teaser trailer looks big.

Set to Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again, the trailer jumps between three different periods: 1932, 1937, and 2017. We get glimpses of a small-town casino, Spain during the Civil War, and the present day, with each period introducing us to characters whose lives become connected across generations.

There’s Carlos, played by Milo Quifes, who is searching for a place where he can belong in a country fractured by conflict. Then there’s Sebastián, played by singer-songwriter Guitarricadelafuente in his acting debut, who finds an unexpected connection on opposite sides of an increasingly divided Spain. Finally, Alberto, played by Carlos González, discovers a family secret that has been buried for generations.

That structure is a pretty ambitious way to tell a story, especially when the film is dealing with something as complicated as queer history. But Los Javis clearly knew exactly what they wanted to build. Speaking to Netflix’s TUDUM, Ambrossi explained that they had the film’s narrative structure mapped out before filming, with even the cuts already present in the screenplay.

The result, at least from what we see in this first teaser, is a film that feels deliberately constructed to show how the past continues to shape the people who come after us.

And that idea is particularly important for La Bola Negra, because this is very much a story about queer lives existing within that history. When Calvo and Ambrossi began writing the film, they wanted to explore “freedom, legacy, and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility,” while honoring the generations whose courage helped make the freedoms we have today possible, as the directors told Netflix’s TUDUM.

That makes the film’s journey through 1932, 1937, and 2017 especially intriguing. We’re watching different generations of men navigate love, identity, belonging, and secrecy at radically different moments in Spanish history, while also seeing how the things left unresolved by one generation can echo into the next.

The cast certainly gives us plenty to be excited about, too. Alongside Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, and Milo Quifes, La Bola Negra features special appearances from Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. For Guitarricadelafuente, the film also marks a major new chapter as he makes his acting debut.

And if the teaser wasn’t enough to get us curious, Netflix has also released three new posters for the film, giving us another look at its characters and visual world.

There’s still plenty we don’t know about La Bola Negra, and honestly, we’re perfectly happy to keep it that way for now. The teaser gives us enough to understand the film’s sweeping ambitions without giving away the stories connecting these three generations, which feels like exactly the right approach for a movie we’ll want to experience for ourselves.

Following its Cannes debut, La Bola Negra is also heading to the Telluride Film Festival before continuing its festival journey with a Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 15. The film will then begin its U.S. theatrical run on October 16 before arriving on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada on December 2.

For now, the teaser trailer has done exactly what it needed to do: give us a taste, leave us curious, and make us want the rest immediately. We’re definitely ready to see what Los Javis have in store for us when La Bola Negra finally arrives.
