Benjamin Alire Sáenz, Beloved LGBTQ+ Author, Dies at 71

The LGBTQ+ literary community has lost one of its most beloved voices. According to El Paso Matters, acclaimed author Benjamin Alire Sáenz died Tuesday night following a lengthy illness. He was 71 years old.

For countless readers around the world, Sáenz’s novels became a refuge. Through stories that centered queer, Mexican-American characters with tenderness, honesty, and hope, he reminded generations of young people that they deserved to be seen, loved, and understood. Books like Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and its sequel didn’t simply become modern LGBTQ+ classics; they became lifelines for readers searching for themselves within their pages.

Today, our thoughts are with Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s loved ones, friends, readers, and everyone whose life was changed by his work. His stories will continue to find new audiences for years to come, carrying forward the empathy and compassion that defined his writing.

For us at Q+, this loss feels deeply personal. When our publication was still finding its footing, Benjamin was one of the very few established authors who genuinely embraced what we were trying to build. He followed our work, celebrated our milestones, and never hesitated to show us support. Internally, we affectionately called him “Tío Ben,” because that’s exactly what he felt like: someone who believed in us long before we felt like anyone had a reason to.

As an independent LGBTQ+ publication, that kind of encouragement meant more than we could ever put into words. We had the privilege of reviewing the Aristotle and Dante books knowing that the person who wrote them had actually read our work. To know that our reviews had reached him—and that he appreciated them—felt like receiving a quiet seal of approval from an author we admired immensely. It gave us confidence to keep writing, to keep championing queer stories, and to believe that our voices mattered too.

We never got the chance to meet Benjamin in person, something we always hoped would happen one day. That opportunity is now gone, and that reality hurts. Still, we’re incredibly grateful that our paths crossed at all, even if only through words, books, and the kindness he extended to us across social media. Those interactions may have seemed small to him, but they made a lasting impact on us.

We know we’re only one of countless writers, booksellers, librarians, educators, publications, and readers whose lives he touched through both his work and his generosity. Judging by the outpouring of love already beginning to emerge, it’s clear that the kindness we experienced wasn’t the exception… it was simply who he was.

Benjamin Alire Sáenz dedicated his career to telling stories about identity, love, family, belonging, and the courage it takes to accept ourselves. His work gave countless LGBTQ+ readers permission to imagine a future where they could be loved exactly as they are. That legacy cannot be measured by awards or bestseller lists alone. It lives in every reader who found comfort in Ari and Dante, in every young queer person who felt seen for the first time, and in every writer he inspired simply by believing their stories were worth telling.
