Mae Martin and Netflix Make It Official With New Creative Partnership

We love it when queer talent gets the backing it deserves, and today’s news is exactly that kind of win. Netflix Canada has officially announced an expanded creative partnership with Mae Martin, confirming a new first-look deal that will see the comedian, actor, and screenwriter creating and developing new series projects for the streamer, alongside starring in a brand-new stand-up special.

The partnership feels like a natural next step for Martin and Netflix, who have already built a strong creative relationship over the past several years. Most recently, that collaboration resulted in Wayward, last fall’s buzzy thriller series that premiered at TIFF before landing on Netflix, where it spent five weeks in the global Top 10. For a Canadian-led, queer-driven project to resonate at that scale is no small feat, and it’s clearly caught Netflix’s attention.

Under this new deal, Martin will continue to develop original series ideas exclusively for Netflix while also returning to the stand-up stage with a new comedy special. It’s an exciting expansion of their creative footprint, especially given Martin’s ability to move fluidly between genres, tones, and formats without losing their distinctive voice.

In a statement, Martin reflected on the relationship they’ve built with the platform over the years, saying: “Over the last seven years, I’ve been lucky to build relationships at Netflix that have felt supportive and creatively empowering, allowing my stories (and weird jokes about snow globes, etc.) to reach a global audience. I’m so grateful to continue that relationship, and this vote of confidence will allow me to elevate other voices as well! I can’t wait to show everyone what I’ve been cooking up.”

That emphasis on elevating other voices feels especially meaningful coming from a nonbinary creator whose work has consistently centered queer identity, vulnerability, and emotional honesty. From Feel Good—the semi-autobiographical Netflix series Martin created, wrote, and starred in—to their 2023 stand-up special SAP, their storytelling has carved out space for nuanced, messy, deeply human LGBTQ+ experiences that don’t often get mainstream spotlight.

Netflix clearly sees that value too. Danielle Woodrow, Director of Content for Netflix Canada, shared: “Mae is a singular voice who brings a rare combination of originality and curiosity to everything they do. We were thrilled with the success of Wayward and can’t wait to see what they dream up next.”

For us, this partnership isn’t just about new content; it’s about continued investment in queer creators who challenge norms, cross genres, and bring authenticity to the screen. Whatever Mae Martin is cooking up next, we’re ready to watch, listen, and proudly claim it as another step forward for LGBTQ+ storytelling on a global stage.
