Chris Colfer’s The Land of Stories Is Headed to the Big Screen
We’ve got good news for all the fans of Chris Colfer’s bestselling book series The Land of Stories: a movie is officially in the works! Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired the rights to adapt the beloved fantasy series for film, and we’re already dusting off our crowns and spellbooks.
In an exclusive revealed by Deadline, it was confirmed that Academy Award nominee Phil Johnston—best known for Ralph Breaks the Internet—is attached to write the live-action adaptation. With someone who’s no stranger to bringing heartfelt stories and bold adventures to life, we’re hopeful this magical world is in good hands.

For those who haven’t yet ventured into The Land of Stories, the series follows twins Alex and Conner Bailey as they fall into a magical realm where fairy tales are real and far more complicated than we ever imagined. What starts as a birthday gift from their grandmother—a mysterious book of fairy tales—turns into a life-changing quest to return home. Along the way, they meet iconic characters like Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty, but also face off against dark forces, including the chilling Evil Queen, who has her own sinister plans for the magical Wishing Spell.
Colfer’s The Land of Stories spans six main novels: The Wishing Spell, The Enchantress Returns, A Grimm Warning, Beyond the Kingdoms, An Author’s Odyssey, and Worlds Collide. As well as companion books, a graphic novel, and a treasury of reimagined fairy tales. With over 13 million copies sold across 35 countries, it’s safe to say this series has made a major impact on readers of all ages, and especially on young queer readers who’ve found comfort and empowerment in Colfer’s magical storytelling.

Emma Watts brought the project to Warner Bros. and will produce alongside Colfer, with Rob Weisbach executive producing. And yes, Colfer himself is staying closely involved, which already feels like a blessing from the Fairy Godmother.
Colfer shared the good news on Instagram with a caption that reads, “Wish us luck, kids! I think the world could use a little magic right now.” And honestly? We couldn’t agree more.
We’ll be following this adaptation of Colfer’s The Land of Stories every step of the way, and you can bet we’ll be sharing updates as soon as they drop. Whether you grew up with Alex and Conner or you’re just discovering their story now, there’s never been a better time to dive into this enchanting series.
