“I feel the EP’s quite direct — I’m not that good at hiding how I feel which is why a lot of my songs are quite literal,” Levin explains. “There’s sarcastic lyricism, vulnerability, frankness and romance all across this EP. It’s not so much different from my previous music, more of a personal insight to who I am.”
That honesty is exactly what makes Motions such a compelling listen. Each track flows into the next like a diary entry; sometimes playful, sometimes aching, always real. From the candid charm of Call Me Names to the flirty bounce of Sugar (“one of the few uplifting tracks I’ve written,” she admits), the EP covers the emotional spectrum with ease. But the heart of Motions beats strongest in its final track, Pass You By. Written in memory of Levin’s late mother, it’s a quiet, powerful tribute that lingers long after the last note. “I wanted to reframe how I felt about her passing and talk about these moments we had together and immortalize them,” she says. “‘Pass You By’ is a message I wanted to share about not taking the love that exists right now for granted, because I suppose in some ways I have regrets that I did as I was naive to how fast life can do just that, ‘pass you by.’” It’s an incredibly moving close to an EP already full of heart.
With Motions, Lois Levin proves she’s not just one to watch, she’s already here, and she’s bringing something fresh to the table.
