Lois Levin’s Motions Is the Soulful EP You Need This Weekend

It’s Friday, which means it’s time to refresh those playlists, and we’ve got just the thing. Rising British soul and jazz singer Lois Levin is here with her brand new EP Motions, and we’re telling you right now: this one’s a must-listen.

Motions marks a major milestone for Levin. It’s her first full EP released solely under her name, following her 2023 collaboration with Baltic Jazz Recordings. And while we’ve loved watching her career take shape, this project feels like the moment she fully steps into her own. Across five rich, emotionally layered tracks, she lets us into her world—and we’re grateful for the invitation.

“I feel the EP’s quite direct — I’m not that good at hiding how I feel which is why a lot of my songs are quite literal,” Levin explains. “There’s sarcastic lyricism, vulnerability, frankness and romance all across this EP. It’s not so much different from my previous music, more of a personal insight to who I am.”

That honesty is exactly what makes Motions such a compelling listen. Each track flows into the next like a diary entry; sometimes playful, sometimes aching, always real. From the candid charm of Call Me Names to the flirty bounce of Sugar (“one of the few uplifting tracks I’ve written,” she admits), the EP covers the emotional spectrum with ease. Songs like Felt and Excuse dial up the intimacy, peeling back layers of frustration, longing, and vulnerability. Time, how we use it, how it slips through our fingers, ties the whole thing together.

But the heart of Motions beats strongest in its final track, Pass You By. Written in memory of Levin’s late mother, it’s a quiet, powerful tribute that lingers long after the last note. “I wanted to reframe how I felt about her passing and talk about these moments we had together and immortalize them,” she says. “‘Pass You By’ is a message I wanted to share about not taking the love that exists right now for granted, because I suppose in some ways I have regrets that I did as I was naive to how fast life can do just that, ‘pass you by.’” It’s an incredibly moving close to an EP already full of heart.

With Motions, Lois Levin proves she’s not just one to watch, she’s already here, and she’s bringing something fresh to the table. Her blend of soulful storytelling, old-school jazz flavor, and modern vulnerability makes this a standout release. So if you’re looking for music that hits that sweet spot between emotional depth and pure vibe, this one’s for you.

Turn up Motions, let it wash over you, and don’t be surprised if you end up hitting repeat. Music this honest has a way of sticking with you, and Lois Levin’s voice? It’s one you won’t soon forget.
