Sex Education Season 4: Teaser trailer, release date, and some sad news!

We have good and bad news for fans of Netflix’s Sex Education. Today, the streaming giant released the teaser trailer and release date for its previously announced fourth season, but along with the much-anticipated clip, it also announced that this beloved show is sadly coming to an end. Yes, you read that right, folks, Season 4 will be the final season.

In a letter addressed to the fans, creator, lead writer, and executive producer, Laurie Nunn explained: “…A lot has happened since our first writers’ room in 2017, when we spent a month in a cramped office above a sex shop, talking about what it felt like to go through puberty. The painful awkwardness, first crushes, and big, big feelings.

“We wanted to make a show that would answer some of the questions we all used to have about love, sex, friendship, and our bodies. Something that would have helped our inner teenagers feel a little less alone. It’s been overwhelming seeing how the show has connected with people around the world, and we hope it’s made some of you feel a little less alone too.

“Writing this feels bittersweet, as we’ve decided the fourth season will also be the final instalment of our show. This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallised, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate.”

She ended the letter by saying, “We are incredibly proud of Sex Education and feel indebted to our brilliant writers, cast, and crew who put so much heart into making every episode. They have worked tirelessly to bring you the final series, and we can’t wait to share it with you.”

So while it’s really sad to see this TV show go, we’re grateful that at least it’s on its terms. Sex Education is among the series that could be considered rare gems on TV today. Not only does it have a great narrative and story, but it also has an incredible and very inclusive set of characters that make multiple sectors of the world’s population feel represented. Not to mention that it stars great young and veteran stars like Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, and Emma Mackey, to name a few.

Since arriving on Netflix in 2019, Sex Education has been nominated and won multiple awards, including Best Comedy Series for Season 3 at the 50th International Emmy Awards in 2022. The fourth and final season is set to premiere this fall on September 21.

Sex Education is undoubtedly a show that has left a precedent on the screen and that we are going to miss a lot. But we still have one more season to go, so let’s enjoy it together while it lasts, and send this show off as it deserves – with a bang (no pun intended or maybe a little 😏)

Check out the teaser trailer below, which in true Sex Education style is funny as hell:

According to Netflix, Season 4 of Sex Education will follow the beloved group of students as they embark on a new adventure. “Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, whilst Eric is praying they won’t be losers again. But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students – they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level.

There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe, and a group of kids who are popular for being… kind?! Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A-Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the US, Maeve is living her dream at the prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, whilst adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus.”

Joining the remaining OG cast for the final season will be Emmy award-winning actor and Schitt’s Creek star, Dan Levy, Thaddea Graham (Doctor Who), Lisa McGrillis (Somewhere Boy), Marie Reuther (Kamikaze), actress and model Jodie Turner Smith, comedian Eshaan Akbar and newcomers Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James, Reda Elazouar, Bella Maclean and Imani Yahshua.
