Strange World
Strange World is an animated fantasy film set in the mountain valley home of Avalonia. The story follows three generations of explorers on a mission to save their town from an ecological crisis.
The film begins with explorer Jaeger Clade taking his son, Searcher, on an adventure to discover what lies beyond the mountains. However, Searcher tries to convince his father to abandon the dangerous mission as they have already found a plant called Pando that could save their town. Dismissing his son, Jaeger continues his quest alone.
Twenty-five years later, Searcher, now an adult with a family, runs a successful Pando farm. When the crops start to decline, Callisto, a former member of Jaeger’s expedition crew and the president of Avalonia, recruits Searcher to help find out what is causing the decline. Reluctantly, Searcher agrees and sets off on the mission to save Pando. However his wife, Meridian, and their son, Ethan, join the adventure as Ethan sneaks into the ship.
The Clades, along with a group of expert explorers, venture deep into the earth in search of Pando’s heart. However, they find themselves trapped in a vibrant underground world filled with wild creatures and plants. Searcher, separated from the group, is saved by a mysterious figure who turns out to be his long-lost father, Jaeger. Despite their strained relationship, they must work together to find Ethan, who is wandering alone in this dangerous world.
As the three generations of Clades reunite, they discover the truth behind Pando’s decline and face the real threat to their town. The film explores themes of family, forgiveness, and the environmental consequences of exploiting finite resources like Pando. Alongside the adventure, Strange World breaks new ground with LGBTQ representation through Ethan, who is Disney’s first openly gay protagonist in a film.
Ethan’s homosexuality is portrayed with refreshing sincerity and acceptance. His parents, Searcher and Meridian, embrace and support him without making his sexuality a defining aspect of his character. This inclusive approach is a significant step forward for Disney, and it is heartwarming to witness the family dynamics that accept and celebrate Ethan for who he is.
While Strange World follows a familiar formula, it provides an entertaining and visually stunning experience. The racially diverse cast, eco-friendly message, and the inclusion of LGBTQ representation make it a step forward for Mickey Mouse’s parent company.
