Pride 2023: A Q+ celebration
JUNE 1
The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson
It’s important that as we all celebrate Pride Month, we’re also mindful of the struggles the community has faced (and still faces) in the ongoing effort to gain equal rights.
That’s why our first movie recommendation is The Death And Life Of Marsha P. Johnson, a documentary that focuses on the fight for justice for a trailblazer transgender activist whose death in 1992 is still shrouded in mystery.
As the title implies, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson explores the life & untimely death of Marsha P. Johnson. Through interviews and archival footage, the film sheds light on Johnson’s pivotal role in the Stonewall uprising and her tireless fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
It also delves into the mysteries surrounding her death and raises questions about the discrimination transgender folks face to date. The documentary celebrates Johnson’s legacy while raising awareness about the ongoing struggle for equality.
Where to watch? Netflix.
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
With the film adaptation right around the corner (August 11, save the date), it only seemed fitting to start this Pride Month with a reread of one of our all-time favorite books, ‘Red White, & Royal Blue’ by Casey McQuiston.
Red, White, & Royal Blue is a heartwarming LGBTQ+ romance that follows the unexpected love story between Alex, the son of the first female President of the United States, and Henry, a Prince of England.
Forced to fake a friendship for the media, Alex & Henry’s animosity gradually transforms into an undeniable attraction. As their secret relationship unfolds, they navigate personal & political challenges, learning about growth & acceptance, and the transformative power of love.
Through their relationship, Alex and Henry learn to confront their deepest fears and insecurities. They find the courage to challenge societal norms and embrace their true selves, all while navigating the complexities of their roles in the political landscape.
McQuiston’s novel cleverly weaves together politics and romance, offering a refreshing and inclusive perspective. With its witty dialogue, vibrant characters, and engaging plot, Red, White, & Royal Blue is a charming and feel-good read that will leave you rooting for Alex and Henry’s happily ever after.
Queen Charlotte
Released just last month, Queen Charlotte surprised everyone when it introduced us to its first-ever queer romance in the Bridgerton TV universe – the love story of the Queen and King’s right-hand men, Brimsley and Reynolds (aka Breynolds).
And while in the Bridgerton’s spin-off, the romance between young Queen Charlotte and King George III takes center stage, what happens between Brimsley and Reynolds comes as a close second and we absolutely loved that.
LGBTQ+ representation in the Bridgerton universe was looooong overdue and we think that what they did with Brimsley is a good starting point. Whether more LGBTQ+ characters will get to shine on the main show remains to be seen.
But in the meantime, if you needed an excuse to jump on the Queen Charlotte bandwagon and see what all the fuss is about, then this is your sign to binge it. As we say here in the office, do it for the gays!
Where to watch? Netflix.
