Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

If you’re into empowering YA queer fantasy stories, then this book is definitely for you. Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron is a captivating reimagining of the classic fairy tale. It’s a fiercely feminist story of rebellion and self-discovery that we’re sure y’all will enjoy!

Set in a dystopian world where Cinderella’s story is darker than we’ve been told and is being used to control women, Cinderella is Dead follows sixteen-year-old Sophia as she rebels against the oppressive society in which she lives.

Determined to escape an arranged marriage and reclaim her destiny, Sophia teams up with Constance – the last descendant of Cinderella and her stepsisters – and discovers an underground resistance movement that plans to overthrow the evil King.

As they fight for freedom and challenge the twisted legacy of Cinderella, the girls uncover dark truths and embark on a thrilling journey of self-discovery, love, and empowerment.

Pride 2023: Crush

Crush

Are you in the mood for a cute high school rom-com? Then you should definitely check out Sammy Cohen’s debut feature film Crush.

Starring Rowan Blanchard, Isabella Ferreira, and Auli’i Cravalho, Crush tells the story of Paige (Blanchard), a student at Miller High who joins the school’s track team to 1) get closer to her crush, and 2) find out who’s been vandalizing the school with pun-based graffiti – something she is being wrongly accused of.

As time goes on, Paige isn’t really any closer to finding out who the anonymous artist is, but she does start to realize that she has a crush on the wrong girl, which sets up the love triangle you’d expect from a teen film.

In many ways, Crush follows the tried-and-true recipe for teen rom-coms, but what sets it apart from others in its genre is not only that it’s queer (a win for the gays), but that the drama™ that unfolds isn’t rooted in homophobia or trauma, just your average teen angst.

So now you know, if you want a light, funny movie with a happy ending, then Crush is for you.

Where to stream? Hulu, Star+, or Disney+ (depends on the region)
