Nonbinary Teen Nex Benedict Passes Away After School Altercation
This is the type of news we wish we didn’t have to give, but here we are, with heavy hearts, sharing the heartbreaking story of Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old nonbinary high-school student from Owasso High School in Oklahoma, who tragically passed away on February 8, 2024, just a day after being reportedly beaten by classmates on school grounds.
This is a developing story and contains descriptions of violence against a nonbinary minor. It is advised to tread carefully as we navigate this sensitive topic.
Nex Benedict, who identified with they/them pronouns, was described by their mother, Sue Benedict, as a vibrant soul with a passion for learning, art, and gaming. Sue fondly remembered Nex’s love for their cat Zeus and their talent for crafting new recipes. “Nex had a light in them that was so big, they had so many dreams,” Sue expressed to The Independent. “I want their light to keep shining for everyone.”
Tragically, Nex became the target of bullying at school in early 2023 due to their gender non-conforming identity. Despite Sue’s efforts to support and encourage Nex, the situation escalated, leading to the fatal altercation on February 7, 2024.
During the altercation, which Owasso Public Schools referred to as a “physical altercation,” Nex was reportedly attacked by three older girls, resulting in severe injuries. Despite the visible bruises and head trauma, school officials did not deem it necessary to call for medical assistance, and Nex was discharged from Bailey Medical Center later that day.
However, the next morning, Nex collapsed at home and was rushed back to the medical center, where they were tragically pronounced dead. It’s worth noting that Nex had expressed concern about their well-being via text messages, saying that they were still dizzy and nauseous in the morning, “I might have a concussion,” they wrote. This communication highlights the severity of the situation and the need for immediate medical attention, which unfortunately was not provided in time.
The circumstances surrounding Nex’s death have sparked an ongoing investigation, with preliminary information from the medical examiner’s office indicating that trauma may not have been the direct cause of death.
This devastating incident sheds light on the ongoing struggles faced by LGBTQ+ youth, particularly in environments where discrimination and violence persist. Nex’s tragic passing has prompted calls for a thorough investigation and renewed efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, regardless of their gender identity.
As the investigation continues, our hearts go out to Nex’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. A GoFundMe has been established on behalf of Nex and their family to provide support. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available. Until then, let us remember Nex’s light and honor their memory with love and compassion.
