HBO Drops ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Trailer on The Last of Us Day
It’s officially The Last of Us Day, and if you’re a fan of the franchise, you probably saw this coming. In case you didn’t, let’s catch you up: Naughty Dog, the developer behind The Last of Us video game, and HBO have chosen this special day to drop the long-awaited teaser trailer for The Last of Us Season 2. And trust us, this trailer has given us plenty to talk about.
For those unfamiliar, The Last of Us follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor navigating a post-apocalyptic world overrun by a fungal infection that turns people into monstrous creatures. His mission? To escort Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a young girl immune to the infection, across the U.S. to a group that hopes her immunity could be the key to finding a cure. Their journey through a world filled with danger, both from infected creatures and other survivors, forges a deep, emotional bond between them—one that will continue to be tested in Season 2.
Season 1 left us with a gut-wrenching finale, where Joel made a choice that could haunt them both. Now, with the trailer’s release on The Last of Us Day, Season 2 promises to dive into the aftermath of that decision. The latest teaser gives us glimpses into what’s to come, with a focus on Joel’s attempts to find peace with his past actions.
Catherine O’Hara, whose character had been kept under wraps until now, narrates the trailer as a therapist trying to help Joel face his internal struggles. “You can’t heal something unless you’re brave enough to say it out loud,” she says. “Say the thing that you’re afraid to say. Say it out loud, no matter what it is. No matter how bad. What did you do?”
The trailer also teases high-intensity moments, showing hordes of infected breaking into Jackson—the place where Joel and Ellie decided to settle at the end of Season 1. But it’s clear that not everything is smooth sailing for the pair. Though they’ve tried to build a peaceful life, things quickly take a dark turn.
While the teaser doesn’t give much away in terms of plot, we do get quick flashes of new characters and iconic moments from the game. Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby and Isabela Merced’s Dina make brief appearances, adding to the excitement for what’s to come. HBO has already confirmed that, though Season 2 will follow the storyline from The Last of Us Part II video game, it will take its time expanding on certain characters and their backstories, potentially setting up Seasons 3 and 4.
Although no official release date has been shared yet, The Last of Us Season 2 is slated to premiere in 2025. As we await more news and celebrate this The Last of Us Day, we’ll be watching and rewatching the trailer, looking for every little hint about what’s next for Joel and Ellie.
The series will also star Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Rutina Wesley as Maria, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny.
