Good news, fam! The trailer for Dan Levy’s new film, Good Grief, is here and we’re not gonna lie, it looks like this one is going to hurt…a lot. Directed and written by Levy himself, this film takes us on an emotional rollercoaster through the intricacies of friendship, love, and the complexities of navigating grief.
The trailer for Good Grief gives us a sneak peek into a narrative that promises to be both heart-wrenching and heartwarming. At its core, the story revolves around Marc (Dan Levy), who finds himself lost after the unexpected passing of his larger-than-life husband, Oliver (Luke Evans). Marc embarks on a transformative journey to Paris with his two closest confidantes, Sophie (Ruth Negga) and Thomas (Himesh Patel).
Levy, in an interview with Netflix’s TUDUM, beautifully encapsulated the essence of Good Grief. “Good Grief is a cautionary tale about friendship and loss and all the mess that comes with it when the truth is something you’ve evaded for most of your life. It’s funny, it’s bittersweet, it’s a project that’s helped me work through my own grief. And I hope it does the same for other people as well.”

Negga expressed her thoughts on the layers within the story, emphasizing its serious exploration of friendship, loyalty, and the boundaries we set in our relationships. “There are many layers to this story.” She said, “It’s actually a quite serious interrogation of friendship and loyalty and what we tolerate within our friendships and how our friendships can inform our other relationships.”
Meanwhile, Patel praised the script’s modernity and vulnerability, drawing comparisons to iconic works while acknowledging its distinctiveness, “What excited me about the script when I first read it was its originality. It brought to mind some of Nora Ephron’s and Richard Curtis’ movies, but it was also wholly original, modern, and really refreshing to see a film that centered on grief.”
Levy shared insights into the cast’s pre-filming bonding experiences, fostering a camaraderie that translated seamlessly onto the screen. This authentic connection adds layers of depth to the characters and their relationships, enriching the storytelling experience. “Because we were shooting in London, I booked us into Soho Farmhouse and took us to the countryside in those early days to build some chemistry that didn’t even really need to be built. It was already there. We had the loveliest time, and we rehearsed for two weeks, and there was just such love and warmth there. And it really made the editing process easy because you see it, you feel that chemistry, you feel their love for each other.”

And it also acts as a springboard for us to tell a really lovely story about friendship front and center. That is the romance in this film.”
