Rebecca Ferguson and Greta Lee Are Officially Starring in a New Sapphic Romance, Honeymoon / Funeral

For the past couple of weeks, pictures taken by fans on the streets of London have had us wondering whether Rebecca Ferguson and Greta Lee were secretly filming a lesbian romance. Well, we can finally stop speculating because Deadline reports Honeymoon / Funeral is officially happening, and yes, it is very much a sapphic story.

The upcoming romantic comedy, which has been filming in London, has now been confirmed to star Ferguson and Lee. The film comes from director Nahnatchka Khan and screenwriter Julia Bicknell, with MRC financing and overseeing production.

And while we still don’t know a whole lot about the movie, the premise alone has us paying attention.

Ferguson and Lee will play two women who meet on a flight from Los Angeles to London under very different circumstances. One is traveling to her own honeymoon after being left at the altar by her girlfriend, while the other is flying home for her mother’s funeral. Somehow, these two strangers end up spending the following week together.

Yes, we have questions. Mostly, we’re wondering exactly how a woman whose girlfriend has just left her at the altar ends up meeting someone while traveling to the honeymoon she was supposed to be attending. And, naturally, we’re very interested in what happens when that unexpected connection starts to develop. Because honestly, if your honeymoon starts with your girlfriend leaving you at the altar and ends with you meeting someone else on a plane, that’s quite the setup for a romance.

There’s still no word on a release date, and details about the story beyond that initial setup are being kept pretty close to the chest. But with Rebecca Ferguson and Greta Lee leading a queer romance together, we’re already very much on board.

Lee has become one of the most recognizable faces in contemporary cinema thanks to Past Lives, while Ferguson has built an impressive filmography across everything from massive sci-fi franchises to prestige television. Seeing the two of them share the screen in a romantic comedy, and specifically one built around a relationship between two women, is enough to make Honeymoon / Funeral one we’re keeping firmly on our radar.

For now, that’s about all we know. But after those London photos sent the sapphic corners of the internet into detective mode, we’re happy to finally have confirmation that there really is a new queer romance on the way. Now we just need someone to give us a trailer.
