5 Queer films coming out (lol) in 2022

Everyone can agree that 2021 was a complete dumpster fire. Despite the fact that it felt like the universe was on fire everywhere we turned, we have to say, some incredibly creative projects were birthed among the flames. There are some very exciting queer films gracing our screens in the coming months.

The writers here are so busy watching queer content lately, we just can’t keep up! Not that we’re complaining. Queer content is in abundance right now! And not only that, it’s quality, decent content!

Queer representation in the film industry is set to take off this year. The list of queer films set to be released in 2022 keeps growing and growing. Here are just some of the projects we are excited about in the upcoming year.

queer films - bros

Bros

This is one of the queer films that has us vibrating with excitement. This is the first major studio to release a gay rom-com. Starring Billy Eichner and Luke McFarland, we are stupidly excited about this film. Not only does Bros feature a gay romance as the main event, but the cast is an all-LGBTQ+ cast as well.

Two gay men who are both terrible at relationships and way too busy for love collide in this film. Though we don’t know too much about the plot, we’re always here for some dumbasses-in-love kinda stories, if you know what we mean.

Besides, Bros has Luke MacFarland in it. The man could play a garbage bag and stare at the wall and we’d happily call the performance art and buy all the tickets to the show. We are exceptionally excited about this release, we even wrote an article about it a few weeks ago. You can read it here

Bros is scheduled for theater release on September 30.

Thor: Love and Thunder

The queer superhero Valkyrie is set to make her third appearance in the Marvel Universe in 2022 in the upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder. Word on the street is that the film doesn’t really have much time for romance. However, according to the director, Taika Waititi, and gay actress Tessa Thompson, who plays the character, Valkyrie’s bisexuality will be incontestable in this movie.

Thor: Love and Thunder boasts a pretty impressive cast. In addition to Tessa Thompson, the ensemble includes Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Vin Diesel, Melissa McCartney, and many more. The film is slated for release on July 8, 2022.

Fire Island

No stranger to queer films, this year, Hulu is releasing a project that is like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but really gay! Fire Island focuses on two best friends who take a week-long vacation to New York’s Fire Island – the historic gay destination which is situated just off the shore of Long Island.

Fire Island stars Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, and Margaret Cho. Written by Joel Kim Booster and directed by Andrew Ahn, the release date for Fire Island is yet to be officially announced. Everyone loves a good ol’ Pride and Prejudice love story so we’re just going to sit here and patiently wait for the gays to get their go with this one.

queer films - am I ok?

Am I Ok?

Directed by famous lesbian couple Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, Am I Ok? made its premiere at Sundance in January. A coming-out tale that stars Dakota Johnson and Sonoya Mizuno, Am I Ok? is the tale of two best friends and their journey through coming to terms with their sexuality, love, life, and all that grand stuff.

With queer films in the spotlight right now, it’s good to see that the critics are saying good things about this release. We love when queer films feature queer folks in real life! Dakota Johnson came out as bisexual a few years ago, and her on-screen character in this film shoulders the coming-out revelation of the two.

We love Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne in this house, so we’ll definitely be looking into this one!

queer films - beauty

Beauty

Beauty is one of those queer films that we just know is going to sucker punch us right in the gut. It is the story of Gracie Marie Bradley, an exceptionally talented queer Black singer from the 1980s. The epic story is going to be released on Netflix and documents Beauty’s expedient rise to stardom. The problem is though, that Beauty is queer and in a relationship with a very butch lesbian. This, at the time, was very much frowned upon.

Written by Lena Waithe and directed by Andrew Donsunmu, the cast also includes the likes of Sharon Stone, Aleyse Shannon, Niecy Nash, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Beauty is slated for release in April 2022.
