Andrew Ahn’s ‘The Wedding Banquet’ Brings Love, Laughter, and Chaos to Theaters April 18!
Love, family, and identity take center stage in Andrew Ahn’s The Wedding Banquet, a heartwarming comedy that’s about to light up theaters nationwide on April 18. Ahn, known for his deeply personal and beautifully crafted films (Spa Night, Fire Island), brings us a fresh, queerer reimagining of Ang Lee’s beloved 1993 classic. With a stellar cast, a script full of heart and humor, and a story that resonates across generations, this is a film we can’t wait to see on the big screen.
At the heart of The Wedding Banquet is an unconventional but heartfelt story of a chosen family. Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and her partner Lee (Lily Gladstone) are struggling to afford another round of IVF treatments, while their friend Min (Han Gi-chan), a closeted heir to a corporate empire, is desperate to stay in the U.S. after his student visa is set to expire. When Min’s proposal to his commitment-averse boyfriend Chris (Bowen Yang) is rejected, he comes up with a plan: marry Angela in exchange for funding her IVF. It’s a seemingly simple solution—until Min’s no-nonsense grandmother arrives from Korea, determined to throw an extravagant wedding. What follows is a delightful comedy of errors filled with cultural clashes, unexpected connections, and a poignant exploration of what it truly means to be a family.

Bringing this story to life is a powerhouse cast led by Bowen Yang (Fire Island), Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Kelly Marie Tran (Raya and the Last Dragon), Han Gi-chan (Where Your Eyes Linger), Joan Chen (The Last Emperor), and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung (Minari). The film is written by Andrew Ahn and James Schamus, with producers Anita Gou, Joe Pirro, Caroline Clark, and Schamus himself ensuring this reimagining retains all the heart and charm of the original while standing firmly on its own.
