The Boots Trailer Just Dropped and We’re Already Reporting for Binge Duty
With its premiere just around the corner, Netflix has finally dropped the official Boots trailer, and we can already tell this dramedy series is about to hit us right in the feels. The new show, premiering October 9, comes from creator and co-showrunner Andy Parker (Tales of the City), showrunner Jennifer Cecil (Umbrella Academy), and the legendary Norman Lear as executive producer. Based on Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, Boots brings a queer twist to the classic coming-of-age story.
So, what’s Boots all about? At its core, it’s a one-hour comedic drama that’s as offbeat as it is heartfelt. We’re taken back to the tough world of the 1990s U.S. Marine Corps, a time when being gay in the military was still illegal. Enter Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer), a closeted kid who doesn’t really know where he’s going in life, and his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a decorated Marine. The two join a group of recruits who couldn’t be more different from one another, but together they have to survive the landmines—literal and emotional—of boot camp. Along the way, bonds are forged, secrets are tested, and true identities start to shine through.
The Boots trailer gives us a glimpse of all this chaos, comedy, and heart. Some moments lean into laugh-out-loud humor, but the weight of the drama is never far behind. We see Cameron wrestling with hiding his sexuality while trying to survive the brutal training, and the whole group of recruits facing ups and downs as they figure out who they want to be. It’s raw, it’s funny, and it’s got that undeniable spark of queer storytelling that makes us want to binge the whole thing right now.

And because Netflix knows how to hit us with the perfect detail, the Boots trailer is set to a brand-new recording of George Michael’s Freedom. This version is performed by the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus—featuring 30 singers, including U.S. military veterans—which makes it not just a soundtrack choice but a statement. It’s queer history, resilience, and joy all rolled into one powerful moment.
