Our Dining Table: A first look at the Japanese BL

Our Dining Table is adapted for the screen from the popular manga titled Bokura no Shokutaku by Mita Ori. The Boy’s Love industry is thriving right now, but there is something about Japanese BL that just hits differently. The subtlety of Our Dining Table is no exception to this notion.

We’ve watched the first episode, and in this first look at this new production, we have to say that this particular Japanese BL definitely has our attention. Starring Inukai Atsuhio and Lijima Hiroki in a sweet, low-key tale about an awkward man who has a complicated relationship with food, and how his life is changed by two adorable brothers.

Hozumi Yutaka has been through some things. The poor young man is definitely carrying around some kind of trauma which makes it difficult for him to eat in front of others. When cute, little Ueda Tane (Maeyama Kuuga) walks up to him outside one day, Yutaka ends up giving the little man a rice ball to eat, which goes down quite a treat.

The rice ball made such an impression on the little child, that Tane then pesters his brother to take him back to where they ran into Yutaka to ask about the rice ball. Ueda Minoru then invites Yutaka to come to their place to show them how to make the rice ball. Minoru doesn’t really think the man will show up but is pleasantly surprised when he does.

First Look at Our Dining Table, Japanese BL

Despite the fact that Yutaka is socially awkward, it’s clear that there is chemistry between the two older men. Yutaka also seems quite fond of the little Tane, so it’s not hard to see where this might be going.

Our staffers are definitely invested enough already that we’re going to watch the remaining nine episodes of this Japanese BL. Our Dining Table is modest and has a classic quietness about it that BL productions often lack. Each episode is just twentyish minutes each, so this is probably a good choice for busy people. It’s not a huge commitment or investment of time, but something tells us that every minute we spend with this particular show will be worth every second.
