HBO Cancels We’re Here After 4 Seasons
In the latest wave of cancellations hitting HBO and its streaming service Max, LGBTQ+ shows seem to be taking the brunt of the cuts, and sadly, this time the casualty is the reality TV show We’re Here. After what we feel was a phenomenal Season 4, the show won’t be returning for a fifth season.
Series creators Johnnie Ingram and Stephen Warren shared their thoughts in a heartfelt statement on social media:
“Although the current run of our show has ended, We’re Here’s message of love and acceptance has already made a lasting impact for 2sLGBTQIA+ people across the country. Creating We’re Here was a dream come true and our hearts are overflowing with love. We’re grateful to HBO for giving us this opportunity, to our fierce drag mothers and drag community, to our production team at IPC, and to all those that shared their hearts and stories with us. It took a lot of courage, sequins, and sweat to make We’re Here, and we are so proud to leave behind four Peabody, Critics Choice, GLAAD, and Television Academy award-winning seasons that are wildly entertaining, enlightening, and give hope to anyone struggling to live their truth.”
We’re Here was an American reality television series that first aired on HBO in April 2020. Featuring former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants, the show followed drag queens as they traveled across the U.S., recruiting small-town residents to participate in one-night-only drag shows. It was a unique blend of celebration, transformation, and education, bringing drag to places where it might not otherwise have had the spotlight.
While Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara, and Shangela hosted the first three seasons, season 4 saw Jaida Essence Hall, Priyanka, Sasha Velour, and Latrice Royale step in to lead the way. This latest season also introduced a format change, focusing on two heartland locales, rather than the usual one town per episode.
It was a show with tremendous potential, so we’re deeply hurt by seeing it go. As we mentioned in our review of its last season, amidst the flood of LGBTQ+ show cancellations, having a reality TV series like We’re Here stand tall wasn’t just important, it was a major achievement.
Losing this show feels like reopening a wound that’s been bleeding with the cancellation of so much queer representation in media. Change needs to happen, and part of that means acknowledging the harsh reality many in the LGBTQ+ community still face—something We’re Here did so beautifully.
From the bottom of our big queer hearts, we want to thank everyone involved in the making of this show for what they’ve done for the community and all those whose lives were touched by its four amazing seasons.
The legacy of We’re Here will undoubtedly live on. It showed us that no matter where you are, who you are, or what your town looks like, there’s space for love, glitter, and fabulous self-expression. And that’s a legacy that won’t fade away.
All 4 seasons of We’re Here are available to stream on Max. Follow us on X and Instagram for all queer stuff!
